NORMAN – After the series opener tallied 34 runs between the Cardinal and Sooners, Oklahoma baseball shut out No. 7 Stanford 2-0 on Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park. It was the first top-10 victory for the Sooners since their 5-1 win against then-No. 5 Texas A&M in the College World Series.
Oklahoma (14-13) tallied its first run of the contest on a sacrifice fly by sophomore center fielder
John Spikerman in the first inning that plated junior shortstop
Anthony Mackenzie.
After four scoreless innings, Oklahoma pushed its second run across on a solo home run by junior right fielder
Bryce Madron. Madron, who tallied a season-high five RBI in the series opener, hit a three-run homer against the Cardinal (17-6) on Thursday. The Blanchard, Okla., product finished 2 for 4 at the plate.
Starter
Braxton Douthit held the potent Stanford offense at bay, pitching 6.2 innings. Douthit recorded five strikeouts and earned the win to improve to 4-1 this season.
"He [Braxton Douthhit] did a really good job of making pitches," said Oklahoma head baseball coach
Skip Johnson. "Didn't try to overthrow. Just make pitches and make some quality pitches when he had to make pitches."
After his three-RBI performance in the opener,
Diego Muniz earned the start behind the dish.
"Diego did a great job of settling those guys down, and just made those guys make pitches," said Johnson. "A lot of times when you're out there on the mound, you feel like you're on your own island by yourself. But this guy [
Diego Muniz] is behind you and he's talking to you."
Relievers
Carter Campbell and
Carson Pierce each pitched a scoreless inning.
Carson Atwood secured the final out of the contest for his first save of the season. The Sooner pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts and allowed five hits.
Stanford's Quinn Matthews recorded the loss (3-2) and pitched 7.2 innings with 10 strikeouts.
