Pettis Powers Sooners Past No. 7 Stanford

April 01, 2023 | Baseball

NORMAN Kendall Pettis crushed a two-run home run in the seventh inning to propel Oklahoma baseball to a 6-5 victory over No. 7 Stanford on Saturday night.

The win marked the second in as many days against the top-10 Cardinal, handing Stanford consecutive losses for only the second time this season.

"On Thursday night, the score was so lopsided," said Oklahoma head baseball coach Skip Johnson. "We kept telling them to pull for each other because that's really the strength of our team."

Oklahoma held a two-run advantage heading into the seventh after it plated a pair of runs on triple by sophomore third baseman Wallace Clark and single by catcher Diego Muniz. The Cardinal responded with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh.

With the score knotted at 4-all, freshman designated hitter Easton Carmichael slapped a single to right with one out. Redshirt junior left fielder Kendall Pettis launched a two-run homer on the second pitch he saw, reaching the Sooners' final tally.

Stanford, who accounted for 23 runs in the opener, did not go down without a fight. The Cardinal plated a run in the top of the eighth on an Alberto Rios double to left. With the tying runner on third, Aaron Weber shuttered the Stanford offense with a strikeout to end the inning.

The Cardinal again threatened in the ninth.

After consecutive outs to open the inning, Stanford had runners on the corners. Weber continued his work on the mound, forcing a fly out to Pettis in left.

Starter Jamie Hitt pitched six innings and recorded five strikeouts. Reliever Carter Campbell pitched 1.1 innings and earned the win (3-2). Weber tossed the final 1.2 innings, earning his fifth save of the season. Stanford's Drew Dowd entered in the fifth and recorded the loss (3-2).

"He [Jamie Hitt] was a lot better today," said Johnson. "Beginning of third he was tired, he got out of that one inning and the matchups are better. We started him that inning and he walked the guy and we had to go get him for the matchup. Carter [Campbell] did a good job."

Junior right fielder Bryce Madron continues his hot streak at the plate and finished 2 for 2 at the plate with three walks. Rocco Garza-Gongora plated two RBI, plating a run on a single in the first and another on a sacrifice fly in the third.
