K.J. Kindler in 2007 and has posted 68 consecutive home victories dating back to 2014.
OU has earned four regular season home wins in 2023, including victories against the second- and third-place finishers at the 2022 NCAA Championships, Florida (March 3) and Utah (Jan. 22), respectively. The wins over the powerhouse programs were showcased on ESPN and ESPN2, respectively. OU also picked up a pair of home Big 12 victories against Kindler's alma mater Iowa State on Feb. 3 and West Virginia on Feb. 24.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
Following the conclusion of Sunday's meet, No. 1 Oklahoma will honor its senior class. OU's four seniors are highly accomplished both on the floor and off. They have helped the program to an undefeated home record (34 wins for fifth-year seniors
Allie Stern and
Olivia Trautman and 27 for fourth-year seniors
Jenna Dunn and
Ragan Smith). Stern and Trautman have helped the Sooners to 122 team wins while Dunn and Smith have helped OU post 90 victories.
The four seniors have combined to earn 19 All-America honors (NCAA and regular season), 11 Academic All-America awards, 10 Academic All-Big 12 accolades, six All-Big 12 honors, five Big 12 individual titles, two Big 12 yearly awards, and they earned nine career perfect 10s. All four won a national team championship in 2022 and were a part of the team's NCAA runner-up finish in 2021. Part of the program's second undefeated season (32-0), Stern and Trautman earned their first NCAA team title in 2019.
Individually, Trautman and Smith are both AAI Award nominees (2022 and 2023, respectively) and helped the Sooners go back-to-back with Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Awards in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Trautman has earned five perfect 10s and 10 All-America honors. Smith has garnered seven All-America honors, won three Big 12 titles and earned three perfect 10s. A two-time All-American, Stern reached perfection on vault during OU's 2022 home opener and finished third on the event at the 2022 NCAA Championships. Excelling on the competition floor and in the classroom, Dunn is a three-time WCGA Academic All-American and two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection.
STAYING AT THE TOP
Oklahoma remains No. 1 in the nation for the ninth consecutive week with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 198.210. OU holds the nation's best scores at home (198.575), on the road (198.425) and at a neutral site (198.125).
The Sooners are steady at the top with a 198.210 NQS, while Michigan moved into the second spot with a 197.960 NQS after its home victory against OU last Monday. Florida is No. 3 with a 197.920 and is followed by Pac-12 opponents Utah (197.805) and UCLA (197.795), at No. 4 and 5. Fellow Big 12 member Denver sits at No. 11 with an NQS of 197.410.
For the sixth consecutive week, OU is ranked in the top three nationally on each of the four events, including No. 1 on vault (49.540) and bars (49.650). The Sooners remain second on beam (49.570) and third on floor (49.545).
IN THE POLLS
Six Sooners own a total of 12 individual top-25 rankings, with at least one gymnast ranked in the top 10 on all four events and in the all-around. Four out of six gymnasts who competed on bars vs. No. 2 Florida and Michigan are ranked in the top 25 in NQS.
Sophomore
Jordan Bowers ranks in the top 15 on all four events and in the all-around, including in the top five on beam (9.950 NQS) and in the all-around (39.670). She's also seventh on vault (9.920 NQS), No. 11 on bars (9.940 NQS) and No. 13 on floor (9.935 NQS).
Juniors
Katherine LeVasseur and
Audrey Davis also boast top-five rankings this season. Both remain No. 4 on their respective events — LeVasseur on vault (9.925) and Davis tied on bars (9.960). Freshman
Faith Torrez is the top freshman in the nation on floor and seventh overall with a 9.950 NQS.
Senior
Ragan Smith and sophomore
Danielle Sievers also enjoy top-20 national rankings for week nine. Smith is ranked No. 14 on beam and No. 17 on bars with a pair of 9.925 NQS scores. Sievers jumped five spots to No. 12 on vault (9.910) and No. 20 on bars (9.920).
FOUR PERFECT10N
Oklahoma has registered four perfect 10s this season, all by different gymnasts on three of the four events. Senior
Ragan Smith earned her third career 10.0 in OU's conference victory at then-No. 9 Denver on Jan. 29. Smith, who became the first Sooner to earn a perfect 10 in 2023, won her first beam title of the season and 13th overall on the event. Last season, she earned back-to-back perfect scores on beam against Texas Woman's (Feb. 6) and George Washington (Feb. 11). Smith now ranks fifth in program history for career perfect 10s (three), tied with NCAA individual champions Brenna Dowell and Nicole Lehrmann.
Sophomore
Jordan Bowers (floor) and junior
Katherine LeVasseur (vault) were two of 11 perfect 10s nationally during week eight of the season, including the only two from the Big 12 Conference. Bowers and LeVasseur's second career perfect 10s against West Virginia on Feb. 24 tied them for eighth in program history for career perfect 10.0 scores with Chayse Capps and Kiara Redmond. Bowers earned OU's first perfect 10 on floor since teammate
Olivia Trautman on Feb. 15, 2019. The other time LeVasseur posted a perfect score was in last season's home opener against Alabama on Jan. 9, 2022.
For the first time since Smith last season, the Sooners earned perfect 10s in back-to-back weeks. Following Bowers and LeVasseur on Feb. 24, Trautman was perfect on vault as OU won against No. 2 Florida last Friday. The 10.0 was Trautman's first since the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Final on April 3, 2021. It also marked Trautman's fifth career perfect 10 and fourth on vault. She is now tied for second in program history for career perfect 10.0 scores with Haley Scaman and 2021 NCAA vault champion Anastasia Webb. Trautman also took home her first vault title this season and eighth overall, tied with teammate
Allie Stern for the 10th most career titles on the event.
REFLECTING BACK
In front of 6,561 fans at Crisler Center on UM's senior night, the Sooners were edged by No. 2 Michigan last Monday evening, 198.025-197.925. In a two-meet week, Oklahoma is the only team in the nation this season to have back-to-back top-two showdowns and did it all in four days.
Super senior
Olivia Trautman was the only Sooner to pick up an individual title, earning the second of her career on vault and ninth overall with a near-perfect 9.975. In her fourth all-around appearance this season, junior
Audrey Davis finished third in the all-around with a 39.575, behind UM's Gabby Wilson (39.800; tied for the sixth-best score in the country this year) and 2022 AAI Award winner Natalie Wojcik (39.650).
The Sooners swung strong on bars to begin the competition with a 49.650 and a 0.425 lead after the first rotation, as Michigan scored a 49.225 on vault. At the halfway point, Michigan's 49.625 on bars cut into OU's advantage, but the Sooners led 99.050-98.850. A season-high 49.700 on floor in the final rotation allowed Michigan to take the victory in its home finale.
The loss for the Sooners was their first in more than a year, dropping them to 13-1 on the season Before Monday, OU had beaten 34 straight opponents, with their last defeat at Florida on Feb. 25, 2022.
SUPER SENIORS RETURN
With COVID-19 derailing the end of their sophomore seasons and being granted an extra year of eligibility, super seniors
Allie Stern and
Olivia Trautman returned for a final season in 2023. Stern and Trautman are the last remaining Sooners from the 2019 NCAA Championship squad.
A full-scholarship athlete each of the last four years, Stern came back as a walk-on for the 2023 season in her last year of eligibility. A staple in the vault lineup, Stern earned a top-three finish on the event at the 2022 NCAA Championships and has earned eight vault titles which ranks her 11th in program history. Stern also earned a career-best perfect 10 on vault to open 2022.
A highly touted recruit, Trautman was named the 2019 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and registered her first career perfect 10 (floor) during her freshman campaign. Starting with 2020, Trautman has come back from injury each year and always looks better each season. The definition of perseverance and leadership, she has earned 10 All-America honors and five career perfect 10s, including one on vault this season in only her second start on the event against then-No. 2 Florida. She has also registered a career-high 9.925 twice this season, including on her first bars routine since last year's NCAA Championships finals, on Feb. 24 vs. West Virginia.
TO 198 AND BEYOND
Oklahoma has totaled 59 scores of 198 or better in program history, including 51 scores since 2016. Of those 51, only 20 have been earned at home with the other 31 coming at road or neutral sites. Seventeen of those scores have come in regional or nationals competition, including a 198.475 mark at the 2019 NCAA Athens Regional Final. The Sooners surpassed their own nation's-best score this season with a program-record 198.575 against West Virginia on Feb. 24. Last season, OU matched an NCAA record with 10 scores of 198 or better in a single season, which the Sooners first accomplished in 2018. They have done it five times this year.
The Sooners currently hold the top spot with back-to-back NQS's above the 198-mark and five straight 198-plus averages this season. Before last Friday's Florida meet, OU earned five consecutive scores of 198 or higher. OU holds the best scores nationally at home (198.575), on the road (198.425 at Denver on Jan. 29) and at a neutral site (198.125 at the Metroplex Challenge on Feb. 11). Eleven teams have hit 198-plus this season, including nine teams in the top 10. Three of OU's opponents have posted multiple scores of 198 or higher, including No. 2 Michigan with four and No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Utah and No. 6 LSU with two each.
CLOUD 9.9
Through nine weeks of the season, the Sooners have posted 137 scores of 9.900 or higher. With 248 routines competed, that means 55.2 percent of the routines have scored at least a 9.9 this season. OU has put up double-digit marks of 9.9 or higher in nine of 10 meets this season, including a season-best 17 vs. West Virginia on Feb. 24.
KINDLER VS. THE PAC-12
In 17 seasons at Oklahoma, head coach
K.J. Kindler is 77-23 against the Pac-12 Conference, including 42-2 over the last six seasons. Over the past four years, the Sooners are 27-1 against Pac-12 schools. OU has earned a trio of Pac-12 victories, including two vs. top-10 teams (vs. No. 5 UCLA on Jan. 7 during the season opener at the Super 16 and against No. 4 Utah on Jan. 22 in front of 7,013 fans, the third-largest home crowd in OU history). No. 7 California is the only other Pac-12 team in the top 10 the Sooners have yet to face this season. OU also defeated No. 20 Stanford at the Metroplex Challenge on Feb. 11.
THE ROAD TO NATIONALS
The road to the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, will make a journey through Norman and Lloyd Noble Center in 2023. OU is one of four NCAA Regional host sites this season, meaning the Sooners will have a home-floor advantage during the three-day regional competition. This will be the fifth time since 2011 for the Sooners to host a regional (also in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2022). OU has won all four regional championships held at the LNC.
The NCAA Norman Regional will be held from March 20-April 1 and all-session tickets are on sale now for as low as $10 for all three sessions.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS: NO. 14 ARIZONA STATE
Boasting arguably one of the most impressive turnarounds nationally in the last six years, head coach Jay Santos is in his seventh season as the head coach of Arizona State. After his first ASU team finished No. 41 nationally in 2017, the Sun Devils improved 18 spots to No. 23 nationally after the 2018 season. It was the program's highest finish since 2007 at the time. Since then, Santos has led ASU to a 196-plus NQS and a top-25 ranking at the end of every season. Last year, the Sun Devils shared the Pac-12 regular season title.
Starting the 2023 season at No. 23, the Sun Devils have climbed nine spots to No. 14, after upset victories over No. 4 Utah and an Oregon State team led by 2020 Olympic champion Jade Carey. Utah finished third at last year's 2022 NCAA Championships, while ASU handed Oregon State its first conference loss this season.
The Sun Devils enter Sunday's competition ranked in the top 25 nationally on all four events and as a team. Senior All-American Hannah Scharf is ranked No. 13 nationally in the all-around with a 39.525 NQS and is tied for 22nd on floor with a 9.925.
