NORMAN — Sophomore second baseman
Jackson Nicklaus tripled, homered and had three RBIs and sophomore center fielder
John Spikerman hit a two-run double to lead Oklahoma to an 11-1 win over Rider in seven innings Sunday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Designated hitter
Caden Powell, a freshman from Clinton, Okla., made his first start of the season and hit an RBI double in each of his first two collegiate at bats. His first double, down the right field line, gave the Sooners (4-4) a 1-0 lead in the second inning. OU broke open the game with six runs in the fifth inning and tacked on two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to end the game. The Riders (4-3) scored their only run on a solo homer in the third inning by left fielder Scott Shaw.
Graduate transfer
Braxton Douthit (1-0) struck out six batters over 6.0 frames to earn his first victory at OU. Junior
Gray Harrison was perfect in relief in the seventh. Rider starter Brian Young (0-1) went 4.1 innings and took the loss.
"We started separating balls and strikes and trying to get the offense going. I thought that was big, getting some big hits at the right times," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "I think we were pressing a little bit at times and rightly so. They're trying really hard. When you try in this game, you fail, and so I think it was really good to get Spikerman going and get Jackson going a little bit."
Freshman catcher
Easton Carmichael started the fifth-inning rally with a one-out walk and scored from first base on Powell's double down the left field line. Nicklaus followed by tripling off the wall in right field. After a walk by redshirt junior left fielder
Kendall Pettis, Spikerman lined a two-run double to left field. Junior shortstop
Dakota Harris put a bow on the inning with a two-out two-run single that made the score 7-1.
Carmichael led off the sixth with a single, setting up Nicklaus' first home run of the season – a two-run shot over the left field wall that extended the lead to 9-1.
Junior first baseman
Anthony Mackenzie started the bottom of the seventh inning with his first home run of the season. His big fly to left center made it 10-1. Junior right fielder
Bryce Madron nearly ended the game with one swing, doubling off the top of the left field wall. His hit, however, set up third baseman
Wallace Clark to knock the game-winning hit, a single through the right side of the infield.
The sophomore Clark had a big day on the hot corner as well, twice going beyond the third base bag to field ground balls and throw out the batter at first base. On the second occasion, he made the throw across the diamond from about five feet into foul territory.
Oklahoma goes on the road for four games in north Texas this week. The Sooners play at UT Arlington on Wednesday and then in the Frisco College Classic at Riders Field in Frisco, Texas, next weekend. First pitch for Wednesday's game at UTA is 6:30 p.m.
