Sooners Take Down No. 4 Duke To Advance

SEATTLE, Wash. - The No. 15 Oklahoma women's tennis team defeated fourth-seeded Duke, 4-2, in the first round of the ITA National Indoor championships on Friday night in Seattle.

Freshman Julia Garcia Ruiz and junior Dana Guzman set the tone in doubles on court three, shutting out Emma Jackson and Iuliia Bryzgalova 6-0. No. 16 Senior Layne Sleeth and graduate student Alexandra Pisareva took the 6-1 ranked win over No. 25 Karolina Berankova and Elizabeth Coleman.

Duke answered with the first court win at the No. 4 spot with No. 21 Jackson prevailing over Garcia Ruiz, 6-3, 6-4. Pisareva started the singles wins off for OU with a court-six victory over Bryzgalova, 6-4, 6-2 to extend the Sooners to a 2-1 lead. No. 83 Guzman finished right behind on court three, taking down Georgia Drummy 6-4, 6-4, only needing one more court to clinch it.

The Blue Devils then claimed the top court as No. 5 Chloe Beck defeated Sleeth 6-4, 6-2. With two courts left, sophomore Emma Staker battled to a 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory against Ellie Coleman on court five.

When play was halted, No. 96 Carmen Corley was up 6-2, 4-6, 5-1 over No. 28 Cameron Morra on court two.

"I'm really proud of this team," said OU head coach Audra Cohen. "When the going got tough, we got tougher. Today we were aggressive and sustained our intensity the whole match. We've played the toughest schedule and with each challenge, we responded by learning and improving. This is committed to improving our standard with every rep. Kudos to their work."
