IRVINE, Calif. — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team swept two games on opening day of the 2023 season at the Mark Campbell Invitational in Irvine.

OU started the day with a 4-0 shutout of No. 16/19 Duke powered by a two-way performance from pitcher Jordy Bahl. The sophomore struck out eight in a complete-game, four-hit performance and chipped in an RBI double at the plate. A 2-for-3, one RBI performance from senior captain Grace Lyons and 2-for-2, one RBI Sooner debut for redshirt senior Haley Lee contributed to the win.

A defensive battle in game two vs. Liberty saw a combined 17 runners left on base before OU was able to bring around the decisive run in extra innings. OU junior Nicole May (10 K) and Liberty righty Karlie Keeney (5 K) both went the distance and kept the offenses at bay before the Sooners broke through with a walk-off bunt in the eighth off the bat of Alyssa Brito for a 1-0 OU win. The play, ruled an error on an errant throw from Keeney, allowed international baserunner Jordy Bahl to race around from second for the game-winning run.

May fanned 10 in eight innings, allowing just four hits and two walks in the shutout of the Flames.

The Sooners continue opening weekend Friday with a 9:30 p.m. CT first pitch vs. No. 17/14 Stanford. The game can be seen on FloSoftball ($) and heard via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide via the TuneIn app.
