NORMAN — Oklahoma wide receiver Drake Stoops has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on, the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation announced Tuesday.
Stoops has registered career highs of 52 receptions and 528 receiving yards to go with his career-high six touchdown receptions. He ranks second in the Big 12 in receptions, third in receiving touchdowns, 10th in receiving yards and 11th in receiving yards per game. He ranks 33rd nationally in touchdown receptions and 27th in total receptions.
The sixth-year senior from Norman is one of OU's most reliable pass catchers. He has notched multiple catches in every game this season, at least four receptions in eight contests and six or more catches four times. He set career highs with 12 receptions and 134 yards on Saturday at Oklahoma State and scored two touchdowns on Sept. 16 at Tulsa.
Stoops has compiled 132 receptions, 1,442 yards and 13 touchdowns in his career. He is a four-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection and was a member of the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team in 2018.
The selection committee will announce the top three Burlsworth Trophy finalists on Nov. 14. The winner will be announced Dec. 4.
Former Sooner Baker Mayfield won the Burlsworth Trophy in 2015 and '16.
No. 17/16 Oklahoma plays host to West Virginia on Saturday at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised by FOX.
