WACO, Texas – The Oklahoma volleyball team battled tough in a five-set match against No. 21 Baylor, falling 14-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 12-15 Wednesday night.
Down 2-0 in the match, the Sooners battled back to force a fifth and final set. The Sooners used a 4-0 run to tie the fifth set at 8-8, but ultimately dropped the set 15-12.
Alexis Shelton recorded her second-straight game with 20 kills to lead the offense. Taylor Preston added in 14 while Hannah Pfiffner set a new career-high with 12.
Payton Chamberlain notched 52 assists on the night and recorded a double-double with 10 digs. The junior setter also tallied three kills and three blocks.
Callie Kemohah led the way defensively with 13 digs. Mele Corral-Blagojevich added 12 and Sydney Thompson recorded 10.
The Sooners went up 7-4 early off a pair of Baylor errors, but the Bears pulled ahead with a 5-1 run and would not relinquish the lead, taking the set 25-14. Baylor took the early lead in the second set as the Sooners struggled to find rhythm offensively. The Sooners made a run late, but dropped the set 25-19.
The teams traded points early in the third with Baylor holding an early 8-7 advantage. Preston landed four kills in a row and Thompson served up an ace to give OU the 10-9 lead. The Sooners pushed their lead to 16-12 to force a Baylor timeout. The Bears pulled within two at 19-17, but the Sooners came out of the timeout to take a 22-18 lead. Shelton sealed the deal with a kill to give OU the third set, 25-20.
The Bears took the lead in the fourth, 9-7, but a 3-0 run from the Sooners made it 10-9 in favor of Oklahoma. The Sooners held on to the narrow lead before Baylor used a 4-0 run to take the lead. The Sooners came back to tie the match at 18-all and the teams continued to trade points. OU regained the lead at 22-21 on a block and held on to take the set 25-23.
The Sooners have the weekend off and will return to the court to host Houston inside McCasland Field House Nov. 9-10.
