NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 10 BYU Saturday afternoon falling 25-23, 25-21, 28-26.
Alexis Shelton notched 14 kills to lead the Sooners offense, her 11th match with double-digit kills in 2023. Taylor Preston added 11 kills while Kelsey Carrington, Lydia Burts and Hannah Pfiffner each tallied five. Burts also recorded seven kills on the night, including two solo.
Payton Chamberlain recorded 34 assists, while Callie Kemohah tallied 13 digs and four assists. Ireland McNees added eight digs for a career high.
At the first media timeout, the Sooners held a narrow 15-14 lead after a back-and-forth first set. Out of the timeout, the Cougars went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. Back-to-back kills from Preston brought the Sooners within one, 21-20. OU saved a pair of set points, but dropped the set 25-23.
After BYU took an 11-6 lead, the Sooners came out firing from the timeout to make it 11-10. The Cougars pushed their lead to 21-14 but the Sooners fought back to pull within three at 22-19 off a kill from Carrington. OU fought off set point but fell in the second frame 25-21.
BYU took a 10-7 lead in the third and held their lead most of the frame. An ace from Sydney Thompson made it a one-point game at 20-19. Back-to-back kills from Preston pulled the Sooners even at 22-all. OU saved two set points and took the lead at 26-25 on a kill from Shelton. BYU used a 3-1 run to take the final set, 28-26.
The Sooners will have a quick turnaround, hosting TCU on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. CT for Military Appreciation Day.
