NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a tough five-set match to TCU Wednesday night, falling 25-22, 25-23, 27-29, 23-25, 13-15 inside McCasland Field House.
Multiple Sooners recorded impressive career highs on the night. Hannah Pfiffner recorded a career best with eight blocks, while Mele Corral-Blagojevich, Ireland McNees and Sydney Thompson set their career highs in digs with 12, 8 and 10, respectively.
Payton Chamberlain notched a career best in assists with 57. Callie Kemohah set a season high with 20 digs.
Lydia Burts and Kelsey Carrington each finished just shy of their career highs in kills as Burts tallied 17 and Carrington chipped in 12.
Alexis Shelton added 18 kills on the night and Taylor Preston notched 14. Shelton, Carrington and Burts all had four blocks in the match as the Sooners recorded 12.0 as a team.
An ace from Ireland McNees tied the first set at 6-6 early and the two sides continued to trade points with TCU holding a 15-13 advantage at the first timeout. The Frogs took a 17-13 lead out of the timeout, but a 6-0 run from the Sooners put them ahead 19-17. Back-to-back kills from Shelton and Pfiffner made it set point and a service ace from Corral-Blagojevich gave OU the set 25-22.
OU rallied from a seven-point deficit in the second to take the set 25-23. Down 18-11, the Sooners used an 8-1 run to tie the match. A block from Shelton and Pfiffner gave OU a 21-20 lead and the Sooners closed the match on a 4-0 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Sooners took a quick 3-0 lead in the third set, but the Frogs battled back to take a 7-6 lead. An ace from Sydney Thompson put OU in front 13-12 and the Sooners extended their lead to 21-17 late in the set. TCU tied the match at 23-all and had set point, but Burts' 10th kill of the match tied things once again. The teams traded multiple set points before the Frogs took the set 29-27.
In the fourth, the Sooners took a 9-6 lead before the Frogs pulled even at 12-all. TCU took a 21-18 lead before OU made it a one-point game at 23-22 but the Frogs took the set 25-23 to force a fifth and final set.
TCU led at the switch 8-5, but the Sooners battled to make it a one-point game at 10-9. Burts tied the match at 10-all with her 17th kill of the game. Preston and Pfiffner gave the Sooners the lead with the 12th block of the night for OU but TCU used a 4-0 scoring run to take the set 15-13.
Next up for the Sooners is a trip to Lawrence, Kan., for a matchup with the No. 16 Jayhawks. The match is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
