AMES, Iowa – Junior setter Payton Chamberlain reached a career milestone of 2,000 assists as the Oklahoma volleyball team swept Iowa State, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20, Sunday afternoon inside Hilton Coliseum.
Needing just three assists to reach 2,000, Chamberlain quickly reached the mark in the first set and finished the match with 38 to bring her career total to 2,035. Of those assists,1,554 have come during her two years as a Sooner.
The Sooners offense nearly doubled up Iowa State with a 51-29 advantage in kills. Alexis Shelton powered the offense with 21 kills, while Lydia Burts chipped in 10 and Taylor Preston added nine.
Defensively, Ireland McNees set a career-high with 13 digs. Chamberlain chipped in nine and Callie Kemohah added eight. As a team, the Sooners tallied 9.0 blocks with Kelsey Carrington and Daleigh Ellison each tallying four.
OU won the opening point in the first set before the Cyclones used a 6-1 run to force a Sooner timeout. The Sooners pulled within three at 12-9 off a kill from Burts. Iowa State took a six-point lead at 21-15, but the Sooners used an 11-3 run out of their final timeout to take the set, 26-24.
At the media timeout, the Sooners led 15-13 and extended their lead to 17-13 on an ace from Corral-Blagojevich. OU was the first to 20 points on a kill from Preston and took a five point lead off a Thompson service ace. Iowa State used a 5-1 run to pull within one at 23-22. The Sooners closed it out on back-to-back kills from Shelton to win the set, 25-23.
The Sooners took a 10-7 lead in the third to force a Cyclone timeout. OU extended its lead to 15-8 on an ace from Thompson to close out a 4-0 run. Iowa State pulled within three on a 4-0 run of their own but the Sooners responded by extending their lead to 18-12. Ellison gave the Sooners set point at 24-19 and a service error by the Cyclones gave OU the victory, 25-20.
OU will return to action for a midweek matchup at Baylor on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start in Waco, Texas.
