Sooners Fall at Kansas

October 28, 2023 | Football

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Dillon Gabriel scored three rushing touchdowns and Tawee Walker rushed for a career-high 146 yards and a score in No. 6 Oklahoma's 38-33 loss to Kansas on a cold and rainy Saturday at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

After the Jayhawks (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) took a 38-33 lead with 55 seconds remaining, the Sooners (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) drove to the KU 23-yard line but Gabriel's third-down pass in the end zone fell incomplete as time expired.

After falling behind 14-0 early in the second quarter, Oklahoma scored touchdowns on three straight possessions to go ahead 21-14 and led 21-17 at the half.

The second quarter included a roughly one-hour lightning delay with 7:50 on the clock. Oklahoma was driving on offense when lightning was detected in the area. The Sooners came back from the delay and tied the game on Walker's 2-yard rush and PAT conversion. After a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Gabriel finished a four-play, 17-yard drive with a 9-yard rushing touchdown. He registered OU's first score of the day on a 7-yard touchdown run with 10:15 left in the second quarter.

Kansas cut Oklahoma's lead to 21-20 with 4:01 left in the third quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Seth Keller and went ahead 26-21 on a 38-yard touchdown rush by quarterback Jason Bean following an OU fumble. The teams then traded touchdowns for the remainder of the game, missing on two-point conversions after each score (KU attempted three and OU attempted two).

The Sooners drove 75 yards in seven plays to go ahead 27-26 on Gavin Sawchuk's 3-yard rush with 35 seconds left in the third quarter. The Jayhawks went back in front 32-27 on a 1-yard rush by Daniel Hishaw with 12:25 to play. OU's Billy Bowman notched his third interception of the season, setting up a 14-yard touchdown drive that ended with Gabriel's third TD of the game (a 1-yard run) that gave OU a 33-32 lead.

Ethan Downs notched his first career interception with 2:29 remaining, but Oklahoma was forced to punt from the KU 40 without picking up a first down. Kansas then drove 80 yards in seven plays, scoring on a 7-yard rush by Devin Neal.

Kansas took a 7-0 lead on a pick-six with 9:25 remaining in the first quarter and went ahead 14-0 on a 9-yard rush by Hishaw.

Gabriel completed 14 of 19 passes (74%) for 171 yards and rushed 14 times for 64 yards. Walker carried a career-high 23 times and averaged 6.3 yards per rush. The Sooners registered a season-high 269 rushing yards in the game. Oklahoma and Kansas each notched three takeaways, but the Jayhawks scored 12 points off the turnovers to OU's six.

Oklahoma plays at Oklahoma State next week. Kickoff for the Bedlam game in Stillwater, Okla., will be announced Saturday night or Sunday morning.
