Farooq Named Paul Hornung Player of the Week

October 10, 2023 | Football

NORMAN — Oklahoma wide receiver and kick returner Jalil Farooq has been named the Paul Hornung Award National Player of the Week after accounting for 180 all-purpose yards and helping lead the Sooners to a 34-30 win over No. 3 Texas Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the Louisville Sports Commission announced Tuesday.

A junior from Lanham, Md., Farooq caught five passes for a career-high 130 yards, rushed three times for 13 yards and returned two kickoffs for 37 yards (with a long of 31 yards) on Saturday. His 43-yard reception in the first quarter led to OU's second touchdown of the game and represented the team's 10th pass play of 40 yards or longer this season. The Sooners are tied for the national lead in pass plays of 40-plus yards.

On the season, Farooq has totaled 20 receptions for 415 yards and two touchdowns, nine kickoff returns for 220 yards and six rushes for 26 yards. He ranks 21st nationally in yards per reception (20.8; fifth in the Big 12), 22nd in kickoff return average (24.4 yards per return; fourth in the Big 12), 34th in combined kick return yardage (220; fourth in the Big 12) and 40th in all-purpose yards per game (110.2). He has registered at least 120 all-purpose yards in three games, including 301 over the last two contests. He has also notched multiple receptions in each of OU's last five games and 100-plus receiving yards twice this season.

The Louisville Sports Commission launched the Paul Hornung Award in 2010 to honor its namesake and native son, and to promote outstanding performances by versatile college football players who often go unnoticed. Each week during the regular season, a panel of college football experts selects players for the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll based on performance. A national selection committee comprised of 17 sports journalists and former NFL stars votes for the Hornung Award finalists and the winner, with fan voting powered by Texas Roadhouse comprising the 18th vote.

No. 5/7 Oklahoma (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) is off this week before hosting UCF (3-3, 0-3 Big 12) on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT and the game will be televised by ABC.
