AUSTIN, Texas – Taylor Robertson tied Kelsey Mitchell's NCAA career 3-point record of 497 made treys, but it wasn't enough as No. 14 Oklahoma fell on the road to Texas, 78-58, in Austin on Wednesday night.
Robertson sunk a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter that pushed her into a tie atop the NCAA annals, but Oklahoma (16-3, 6-2 Big 12) shot just 22% (7-of-32) in the second half as Texas (15-6, 6-2 Big 12) pulled away. After the defeat, the Sooners moved into a first-place tie in the Big 12 with the Longhorns and No. 18 Iowa State.
"Hats off to Texas for what they did tonight," head coach Jennie Baranczyk said after the loss. "I thought they outplayed us, and they were more physical tonight. They're such a big team, and when they shoot it as well as they did, they're really, really good."
Texas opened the night with a 12-2 run that was quelled by Robertson's 3-pointers as OU used a 13-3 close to the quarter to even it up at 20-20. The Sooners kept fighting in the second quarter as the Horns tried to move ahead, but OU trailed just 40-36 at the break. It was a third-quarter shooting slump that eventually proved the difference, as Baranczyk's team made just one field goal in the frame as UT pulled in front. Oklahoma outscored Texas 17-16 in the final frame, but Texas' methodical pace didn't give the Sooners an opportunity to get back into the game.
Oklahoma shot 36% on the night, but just 29% from deep, while the Horns made 48% of their attempts and shot 25 free throws. The Sooners turned it over 24 times, compared to Texas' 13 as the Big 12's top defense racked up 11 steals vs. Oklahoma's high-powered offense.
Skylar Vann led OU with 13 points and seven rebounds, as she was the only Sooner to score in double figure as no other Sooners reached double-digits for the first time in the Baranczyk era. Nevaeh Tot added five points and seven rebounds in the loss. Robertson finished with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting, with her two 3-pointers moving her into a tie with Kelsey Mitchell for the NCAA all-time 3-point record.
Another top-of-the-standings test is next for the Sooners, who travel to Ames, Iowa, on Saturday for a matchup with No. 18 Iowa State (14-4, 6-2 Big 12). Tip is set for 3 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
