AMES, Iowa —
Taylor Robertson shattered the NCAA women's career 3-point record, hitting her 498th career trey en route to 25 points, but No. 14 Oklahoma was downed by No. 18 Iowa State, 86-78, in Ames on Saturday.
Robertson, who tied Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell's NCAA record earlier in the week, broke the record with her first shot attempt of the day at Hilton Coliseum. The guard buried six total 3-pointers on the day, pushing her past 500 for her career.
"It's really cool to break the record just because of all the people that are up there on the list," Robertson said. "I wish I would've broken the record in a win because that's what matters, but it's definitely something that means a lot to me."
Determined to get off to a hot start, the Sooners (16-4, 6-3 Big 12) shot 56% in the first quarter, jumping out to an 8-0 lead early before leading 26-18 after the first. But Iowa State (15-4, 7-2 Big 12) answered back in the second, outscoring OU 24-16 in the frame to tie the game 42-42 at the half. Oklahoma struggled to score in the third, as the Cyclones poured in nine more points than the Sooners in the frame to take a 65-56 lead into the fourth. Oklahoma, who has 10 double-digit comebacks under head coach
Jennie Baranczyk, stormed back in the game's final 10 minutes. Oklahoma cut it to 66-63 with a Robertson layup, then a Roberson four-point play cut it to 71-68. But ISU closed the game on a 15-8 run to pull away for the 86-78 win.
The loss dropped Oklahoma into third place in the conference standings, one game back of No. 18 Iowa State and Texas.
Robertson now has 503 career 3-pointers and is the nation's active leader in 3-point percentage, hitting 44% of her career deep balls. The McPherson, Kan., product also added seven rebounds and four assists to her line Saturday. Her 503 makes are the most of any woman at the Divison I, II or III level, and she has scored over 2,000 points in her career.
Oklahoma returns to Norman on Jan 31 when it hosts TCU at Lloyd Noble Center. Tip is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN.
