Sooners Conclude Weekend In Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Oklahoma women's tennis player Emma Staker advanced to the singles semifinals of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic over the weekend, where she fell in three sets to miss the final match.

Staker, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., defeated three players to advance into the semifinals in her second appearance at the invitation-only tournament. She defeated Marquette's Emma Kojcic 6-1, 6-0; followed by a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Alex Staiculescu of Indiana. Staker then faced off against Notre Dame's Page Freeman in the quarterfinals to advance with a 7-5, 6-3 win. The No.8-seeded sophomore ended her singles run in the semifinals after a three-set battle against No. 4-seeded Naomi Cheong from USC, 6-4, 6-7(6), 10-6.

Also competing in the singles bracket, Guzman took on Notre Dame's Bojana Pozder to grab the 6-2, 6-3 win. The junior met No. 7-seeded Madison Sieg (USC) in the round of 16, where she fell 6-4, 6-1.

Staker and Guzman joined each other in the doubles bracket, coming in the tournament with the No. 4 seed. The duo claimed the 6-4 win over Schneider/Staiculescu (Indiana), before falling 7-5 to Portland's Zelic/Pethybridge in the quarterfinals.

The Sooners will split with a group traveling to the ITF Berkeley 60k in Berkeley, Calif., Sept. 19-25 and the College Ranked Invite in Cary, N.C., Sept. 22-25.
