NORMAN –
Jake Bennett was dominant over 7.0 shutout innings and Oklahoma blasted four home runs in a 14-2 series-opening victory over Kansas State Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Bennett (4-2) registered 11 strikeouts and allowed only two hits and no walks in a start that was delayed by 30 minutes due to inclement weather in the area. The 11 punch outs tied his career high set earlier this season against Northwestern State.
Peyton Graham homered twice to bring his total to 12 for the season.
Jackson Nicklaus put the Sooners (26-14, 8-5 Big 12) on the board in the second inning with his fourth home run of the year.
Tanner Tredaway hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run eighth inning that extended OU's lead to 14-0. The Wildcats (21-20, 3-10 Big 12) scored two runs in the ninth inning.
Twelve of Oklahoma's 16 hits in the game were extra base hits, including seven doubles. Tredaway went 3 for 5 with a double, a triple, a home run and five RBIs. All three of Graham's hit went for extra bases, and he drove in four runs.
John Spikerman also notched three hits at the top of the lineup and scored two runs.
"Jake was really good. He set the tone early and the offense came through and gave him some support," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "It was probably as much support as he had last week, and he was a little sharper today. They have a good hitting team and he kept them off balance. I'm really proud of him for sticking to his routines. It was a good night to hit, the wind was blowing out. Peyton set the tone early, getting a pitch he could hit, and he drove it out of here."
Graham's first homer was a three-run blast to left field in the third inning. Tredaway brought in two runs with a double in the fifth inning and Pettis doubled home a run in the sixth to make the score 7-0. Graham led off the seventh inning with a home run off the scoreboard and Tredaway hit an RBI triple to bring home
Blake Robertson, who reached on his third walk of the game, to extend the lead to 9-0.
In the eighth inning, Spikerman and Robertson hit RBI doubles and Tredaway launched his third home run of the season to left field to reach the 14-0 margin.
K-State scored in the ninth inning on RBI singles by Kaelen Culpepper and Brendan Jones. KSU starter Connor McCullough (3-3) took the loss.
