NORMAN – The Oklahoma baseball team exploded with 11 runs in the third inning to take a 19-1 lead on its way to a 22-10 series-clinching victory over Kansas State Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners (27-14, 9-5 Big 12) plated 18 runs over the second and third frames, sending 17 batters to the plate and scoring 11 runs on four hits and nine walks in the third inning alone. OU notched 17 hits and drew 13 walks in the game.
John Spikerman went 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs and scored three runs.
Jimmy Crooks went 4 for 5 and scored four runs.
Jackson Nicklaus (3 for 5) and
Blake Robertson (2 for 5) both homered. Nicklaus, Robertson and
Brett Squires all drove in three runs.
"They really came out and played offense, and David (Sandlin) settled in," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "He was really good. You have two 40-minute innings in there and it's tough. I was just trying to tell him to execute pitches. I thought our offense played really well, separating balls and strikes all day long. It was fun to watch."
Spikerman was electric on Saturday. He led off the first inning with a bloop double and scored on a groundout by
Peyton Graham, then made a diving catch on a blooper in right field in the second inning. Then in the bottom of the second, he stole second base and scored when the throw down went into center field. In the third inning, he made it all the way around the bases when his double was misplayed in left center field.
Squires hit a two-run double in the second inning and came around to score on an error, giving Oklahoma a 5-0 lead before an out was recorded in the frame. Robertson capped the inning with his third home run of the season, a two-run blast to deep right center field.
After Spikerman's double that plated three runs in the third inning, a hit batter and two walks loaded the bases to set up a two-run single by Crooks. Five straight batters drew walks, Graham brought home a run on a fielder's choice and Robertson singled in a run to bring the tally to 19-1.
The Sooners extended the lead to 21-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning on Nicklaus' two-run homer to right field. It was his fifth of the season. In the seventh, Crooks hit a two-out double and scored on a dropped fly ball in center field to reach the final margin.
Kansas State (21-21, 3-11 Big 12) scored on a solo home run in the third inning by Raphael Pelletier and a two-run homer in the fourth by Cole Johnson. Johnson also hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, and the Wildcats scored four runs in the seventh on two RBI singles and two sacrifice flies.
David Sandlin (4-2) went 5.1 innings and struck out six in the win, while KSU starter Griffin Hassall (4-5) took the loss.
The Sooners will go for the series sweep Sunday at Mitchell Park. Game time is 2 p.m.
