Sooners Sweep Texas Tech in Big 12 Quarterfinal

April 22, 2022 | Men's Tennis

FORT WORTH, Texas — The No. 5-seed Oklahoma men's tennis team swept the No. 4-seed Texas Tech Red Raiders 4-0 in the quarterfinal of the 2022 Big 12 Men's Tennis Championship at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, Friday afternoon.

"Our guys came out focused and relentless all day long," head coach Nick Crowell said. "We knew what to expect from Tech today and our guys were ready."

The Sooners started the day claiming the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Mark Mandlik and Baptiste Anselmo dropped Texas Tech's Francisco Vittar and Olle Wallin 6-2 on court three. No. 68 pair Alex Martinez and Welsh Hotard clinched the point with a 7-6 (4) victory at the top spot over Issac Arevalo and Piotr Pawlak. Mason Beiler and Nathan Han fell 6-4 to Dimitrio Azoidis and Reed Collier on court two.

"There were a few big keys to the match," Crowell said. "Alex and Welsh fighting off two match points was huge to take the doubles point. They fought through some major adversity and tense moments to come out on top. We've been focusing on that and it's great to see them execute it on the biggest stage."

In singles competition, Martinez struck first with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Collier at the No. 2 spot. Mandlik picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win on court three over Wallin to put the Sooners up 3-0. No. 40 Beiler clinched the match against No. 79 Arevalo 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot.

"We got five first sets early on and guys continued to play aggressive with leads," Crowell continued. "It feels good to get the 4-0 victory and now we can turn our focus to tomorrow."

When play was halted, Anselmo was in his third set against Azoidis on court three with a 6-3, 3-6, 0-2 score. Freshman Jordan Hasson was up 6-4, 4-3 against Ribero at the No. 4 spot. On court five, Justin Schlageter was playing a third set agains Pawlak with a score of 3-6, 6-0, 4-2.
