LAWRENCE, Kan. –
Blake Robertson went 5 for 6 with four RBIs and
Peyton Graham notched three hits and three RBIs to lead Oklahoma to a 15-2 victory over Kansas in the Big 12 series opener Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark.
Saturday's game between the Sooners (23-13, 5-5 Big 12) and Jayhawks (16-21, 2-8 Big 12) has been moved up to a noon start to avoid potential inclement weather.
Oklahoma totaled 17 hits on Friday night, scoring three runs in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings, and four runs in the eighth. Robertson and Graham combined for eight hits, seven RBIs, six runs and four extra base hits.
Jimmy Crooks and
Max McGwire each added two RBIs.
Jake Bennett (3-2) struck out seven over 6.0 frames in the start, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks.
Chazz Martinez pitched 1.1 innings in relief and
Jaret Godman got the final five outs of the game.
"I thought Jake was really good early in the game," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "We scored some runs for him, which we hadn't done most of the year, and then he settled in. He pitched through a tough inning there, but he came back the next inning. We went back out and scored some more runs – they put two runs up and we put three runs up, which is a good sign. Blake is consistent – he sticks with the same approach every time. That's what is so fun to watch."
Max McGwire put Oklahoma on the board in the third inning with his second home run of the season. OU extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Crooks, an error that allowed
Diego Muniz to score, and a rundown play on which
Cade Horton stole home.
After Kansas scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Sooners put up three more runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 7-2. Robertson singled and scored on a fielder's choice, Crooks crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by McGwire and
Trent Brown singled home Horton. OU tacked on a run in the seventh when Graham doubled and scored on a single by Robertson.
Oklahoma poured on seven runs in the final two frames. Graham hit an RBI single and Robertson hit a two-run double in the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, Graham tripled in two runs and scored on Robertson's second double of the game.
The Jayhawks scored in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Dylan Ditzenberger and an error that allowed a second run. KU starter Daniel Hegarty (4-4) took the loss.
