Sooners Drop Series Opener to Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jimmy Crooks singled home a run in the first inning, but the Oklahoma baseball team fell to No. 8 Texas in the Red River Rivalry opener Friday evening at Globe Life Field.
Crooks' base hit put the Sooners (15-9, 2-2 Big 12) on the board first. The line drive into center field scored Blake Robertson, who reached on a one-out single. The Longhorns (20-8, 2-2 Big 12) took the lead with three runs in the third inning, then scored single runs in four other frames.
OU starter Jake Bennett (2-1) went 5.2 innings and struck out six batters. Texas starter Pete Hansen (5-0) went eight innings in the win.
"Their pitcher did a great job keeping us off balance," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "We didn't give up any hard-hit balls in the third there. (Hansen) just started making pitches, and they got three runs there and kind of separated the game a little bit. One positive I was really proud of, was to get Jaret (Godman) back out there and throwing good. So that was a good sign."
Ben Abram got the final out of the sixth inning, and Jaret Godman pitched 2.0 frames, striking out two batters. Brett Squires made his debut on the mound in the ninth, striking out a batter and rolling a double play to end the inning.
Texas scored in the third inning on a two-run single by Douglas Hodo III and a sacrifice fly. Mitchell Daly singled in a run in the fourth and hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Skyler Messinger hit an RBI single in the eighth and Dylan Campbell hit a solo homer in the ninth. Of the Texas' 13 hits in the game, 10 were singles.
The Sooners and Longhorns continue the series on Saturday at Globe Life Field. First pitch is set for noon on ESPN2.
