NORMAN –
Jake Bennett turned in another brilliant start, striking out 10 batters over 6.0 frames, but the Oklahoma baseball team dropped its series opener to New Orleans 10-7 in 12 innings Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
A game that began as a pitchers' duel – two runs and eight hits combined through five innings – turned into 17 total runs and 27 hits by the end of the night. The Sooners (11-6) scored four runs in the sixth inning and led 6-1 after the seventh, but the Privateers (11-5) scored six runs in the eighth and ninth innings and won the game with three runs in the top of the 12th.
Bennett and Tyler LeBlanc matched each other for five frames, each allowing a single run in the third inning. UNO scored on a fielder's choice by Amani Larry and OU scored on an RBI triple by
Peyton Graham. LeBlanc struck out six and left the game with two outs in the sixth inning, while Bennett exited after the sixth with a 5-1 lead.
It was the Oklahoma ace's fifth outstanding start of the season. In 30.0 innings pitched this year, he has posted a 0.90 ERA with 33 strikeouts and has allowed just six walks, 17 hits and four runs (three earned).
The Sooners broke out offensively in the sixth inning, plating four runs on three hits – all with two outs.
Jimmy Crooks launched an RBI double to right center and scored on a base hit by
Diego Muniz.
Trent Brown followed two batters later with a two-run double down the right field line. OU extended the lead to 6-1 on a sacrifice fly by
Tanner Tredaway in the seventh inning.
New Orleans cut that lead to 6-3 with two runs in the top of the eighth on a double by Larry and a single by Anthony Herron. Sooners freshman
Keegan Allen came in with two runners on and no outs, and retired three straight batters on a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts to strand the runners in scoring position and preserve the three-run lead. OU had the based loaded in the bottom of the eighth, but a hard line drive was caught by the second baseman, who completed the inning-ending double play.
The Privateers began the ninth inning with five straight hits to tie the game, 6-6. Larry, who finished with six RBIs, hit a two-run single and Pearce Howard hit another single. UNO took a 7-6 lead on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Jeissy De la Cruz.
In the bottom of the ninth, Graham hit a leadoff single and Oklahoma loaded the bases after an error and an intentional walk to Crooks. Muniz was then hit by a pitch to bring in the tying run.
After two scoreless bonus frames, New Orleans scored three runs in the top of the 12th on a single by Isaac Williams and a two-run double by Larry. OU went in order in the bottom half of the inning. UNO reliever Caleb Seroski (2-1) earned the win while
Carson Atwood (2-2) took the loss.
The Sooners and Privateers continue their series Saturday at Mitchell Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
