Sooners Top UTSA in Series Opener

March 12, 2022 | Baseball

NORMAN – Diego Muniz drove in four runs and Tanner Tredaway and Jackson Nicklaus each registered three hits as the Oklahoma baseball team defeated UTSA 10-5 in the series opener afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The Sooners (7-5) once again used big offensive innings to overwhelm their opponent. After putting up seven runs in the fifth inning against DBU on Tuesday, OU plated five runs in the third inning and three more in the sixth against the Roadrunners (10-3). Muniz, Tredaway and Nicklaus accounted for eight of Oklahoma's 15 hits in the game.

Jake Bennett (1-0) turned in another strong outing on Saturday, striking out six batters and allowing just two runs (one earned) and five hits. He has allowed three runs in 24.0 innings over his four starts this season.

"It was a good win today," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "Jake was good. He fought through it after a 35-minute inning, but he settled in and got back in the zone. I thought he did extremely well, and we strung together some hits offensively."

Oklahoma tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Muniz. Cade Horton led off the inning with a triple and scored on the sac fly. The Sooners then busted the game open with five runs on five hits in the third inning. Six consecutive batters reached base, including three straight hits by Blake Robertson, Tredaway and Jimmy Crooks.

Tredaway brought home Robertson with a double down the left field line and Crooks singled through the right side. After Horton was hit by a pitch, Muniz drove a two-run double to the wall in left and Brett Squires plated him with a base hit through the right side to make it 6-1.

UTSA scored in the first inning on a solo home run by Ian Bailey and scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth on a double by Shane Sirdashney to make it 6-2. OU got the run back in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kendall Pettis that brought home Crooks.

The Sooners tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Robertson and RBI singles by Tredaway and Muniz to make it 10-2. The Roadrunners scored the final three runs in the eighth inning on a solo homer by Bailey, an RBI single and a groundout.

Tredaway finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Nicklaus went 3 for 4 with a walk and a run scored. Muniz was 2 for 3 with a walk and four RBIs, and Robertson, Crooks and Horton each scored twice. Carson Atwood got the last five outs, working around two hits with two strikeouts. UTSA starter Jacob Jimenez (2-1) took the loss.

The Sooners and Roadrunners conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon. The second contest will start approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
