Sooners Open Conference Play With Victory

NORMAN — The No. 3 Oklahoma women's tennis team began conference play with a 6-1 win over No. 24 Kansas on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Sooners kicked off the match by clinching the doubles point. Anchisa Chanta and Emma Staker claimed court three, 6-4, against Raphaelle Lacasse and Julie Deming. No. 4 Ivana and Carmen Corley secured the opening point for OU, taking the top court, 6-4, over Maria Titova and Malkia Nguonoue.

When play was halted, No. 68 Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva were up 5-4 over Sonia Smagina and Carmen Roxana Manu on court two.

In singles action, Emma Staker finished first for the Sooners, taking court six 6-4, 7-5, over Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez. Extending the leading, Anchisa Chanta defeated Raphaelle Lacasse, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 4 spot.

To clinch the match and send the Sooners to victory, No. 36 Carmen Corley took down Sonia Smagina, 6-4, 6-2, on court three.

The Jayhawks tallied a point with a court five win from Carmen Roxana Manu over OU's Sasha Pisareva, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

The Sooners collected two more wins to close out the match. Senior and No 44 Ivana Corley secured court two with a back-in-forth battle to tally a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win over No. 124 Malkia Nguonoue. No. 17 Layne Sleeth fought hard for a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 [11-9] win at the top court against No. 59 Maria Titova.

The Sooners are back on March 13 to continue conference play at noon against Kansas State at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
