NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team erased a 10-point first-half deficit to enter the halftime break tied at 37 apiece but was ultimately defeated by Texas Tech, 97-87, Wednesday night in Norman.
With the loss, No. 15 Oklahoma (20-5, 9-4) falls into third in the Big 12 Conference, trailing its next opponent No. 6 Iowa State and No. 7 Baylor by one game. It marks the first time in the 2021-22 season that the Sooners have suffered consecutive losses.
"I thought Texas Tech did an incredible job and controlled the game from the tip," head coach
Jennie Baranczyk said. "We need to be better and we need to be ready – and that's on us as a coaching staff. We have to have our team prepared and so I'm disappointed in a variety of things. But all the credit to them (Texas Tech), they're a really good basketball team and earned it tonight."
Skylar Vann was the Sooners' leading scorer Wednesday night, collecting 17 points on 50% shooting and adding six rebounds and two assists in her effort.
Madi Williams was 6-of-12 shooting for 16 points and six boards, while
Taylor Robertson sunk one 3-pointer and finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard
Nevaeh Tot tied her career high with 16 points while tallying six rebounds and four assists.
The Sooners fell into a hole early as the Lady Raiders (10-14, 3-10) opened the game on an 8-0 run and extended the lead to 14-4 midway through the opening frame. OU bounced back with a strong five minutes to enter the second quarter down four points. Baranczyk's team then used an 8-4 run to claim a 24-22 lead with 7:29 left in the first half off a Robertson trey. The teams traded runs for the remainder of the half and entered the break tied at 37.
The Sooners secured another lead late in the third quarter when
Liz Scott hit a pair of free throws to put OU in front 57-55. However, that would be the final lead for the crimson and cream as Texas Tech outscored the Sooners 34-27 in the fourth quarter by shooting 20-of-22 from the charity stripe in the final frame to put the game away.
Oklahoma shot 45% (31-69) from the field and made 17 of its 19 attempts from the free throw line, but an 8-of-29 performance from deep halted the Sooners' comeback attempts. OU dished out 17 assists compared to just 14 turnovers, but TTU had three players score 20 or more points in the win.
On Saturday, the 15th-ranked Sooners will look to right the ship when they head to Ames, Iowa, for a showdown with No. 6 Iowa State (21-4, 10-3), who was knocked off by No. 14 Texas on Wednesday, 73-48. A win over the Cyclones would put the Sooners back into a tie with Iowa State in the Big 12 standings as the regular season winds down. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
