AMES, Iowa – The Oklahoma women's basketball team was downed by No. 6 Iowa State on Saturday night in Ames, falling 89-67 at Hilton Coliseum.
Madi Williams led No. 15 Oklahoma (20-6, 9-5) in the top-15 showdown, scoring 20 points and corralling six rebounds in the loss. It's Williams' ninth 20-point game in Big 12 play, second most in the league. Skylar Vann added 15 points of her own on 6-of-9 shooting. Taylor Robertson finished with five points and seven rebounds. With the loss, the Sooners move into fourth place in the Big 12 and two games behind the Cyclones and No. 7 Baylor who maintain the top spot.
"Well we faced some Hilton Magic today," head coach Jennie Baranczyk said after the loss. "They were obviously very good from the 3-point line. There are some moments that I'm really proud of and other moments that we've got to continue to get better. But we know that this is an incredible place to play and it is a standard for women's basketball in terms of atmosphere. It's an atmosphere we want to build in Norman, to be honest."
Hilton provided a tough road environment for the Sooners, as 11,321 Cyclone fans poured into the arena. That energy pushed Iowa State (22-4, 11-3) off to a fast start, making its first two 3-point attempts. The Cyclones sunk six of their 10 3-point attempts in the first quarter to take a 28-16 lead after 10 minutes. However, the Sooners answered with a stronger second quarter, outscoring the Cyclones 17-15 in the frame by holding ISU to just a 3-of-12 mark from deep in the quarter. Vann sunk a trey with 1:16 remaining in the half to cut the deficit to nine at 40-31, but Iowa State would enter the break up 43-33.
Oklahoma fell into a deeper hole in the third quarter when Iowa State opened the frame on a 14-6 run to take an 18-point, 57-39, lead at the midway point of the third. The Cyclones extended their lead to 71-45 by the end of the frame. The Sooners fired back with a 7-2 run to open the fourth quarter, but Iowa State righted its ship to claim the decisive victory.
Iowa State finished with 16 3-pointers on the night, tied the most for an OU opponent in conference play in program history. The Sooners sunk seven treys of their own, but ISU's 47% clip from the field a perfect 100% mark from the charity stripe was too much to overcome.
The Sooners will look to rebound Wednesday when they travel to TCU for a matchup with the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth. That contest is available on ESPN+ and will tip at 6 p.m.
