Men's Hoops Opens Season Against Sam Houston

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's basketball opens the 2022-23 regular season on Monday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. against Sam Houston at Lloyd Noble Center.

Oklahoma has won all five meetings against the Bearkats and have won its last 19 season openers dating back to the 2003-04 season. 

In Oklahoma's lone exhibition, the Sooners hosted Oklahoma City, earning the 89-53 victory. Grant Sherfield led the Sooners with a team-high 14 points and four assists. Tanner Groves tallied a double-double, finishing with 12 points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Freshmen Milos Uzan and Otega Oweh each finished with 11 points. 

Seven Sooners made their first appearance in the Crimson and Cream in the exhibition. 

ON THE AIR

Monday's game will be televised on ESPN+ with Chad McKee and Bryndon Manzer on the call.

The contest is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. CT and will air on the Sooner Sports Radio Network (KRXO 107.7 FM The Franchise in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa; Varsity Radio App) with Toby Rowland and Kevin Henry announcing.

BIG RED RALLY

  • The Big Red Rally: Basketball Edition starts at 3 p.m. and is hosted in partnership with the University of Oklahoma Student Government Association. The event will feature prizes, Jordan gear giveaways, autographed items and a chance to hear from head coaches Jennie Baranczyk and Porter Moser. Students in attendance have the opportunity to win over $80 thousand in prizes, including a chance to win a 2023 Jeep Gladiator courtesy of Fowler.
  • The first 2,022 students will receive free Big Red Rally T-shirts. In addition, students will be able to take advantage of unique food and beverage specials. 


SCOUTING THE BEARKATS

  • The Bearkats were picked to finish eighth in the Western Athletic Conference coaches poll and sixth by the media. Senior Javion May was selected to the Preseason Coaches' All-WAC Second Team. May is one of three starters returning from the 2021-22 squad. He was named to the 2022 WAC All-Defensive Team and averaged 5.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per contest. Jaden Ray started 30 games last season and averaged 8.3 points per game. Tristan Ikpe started 32 games last season and adds 6.7 points and 5. 7 rebounds per contest.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Four Sooners scored in double figures and OU earned the 89-53 victory over Oklahoma City.
  • Grant Sherfield led the Sooners with 14 points and added four assists. Tanner Groves tallied a double-double, adding 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Freshmen Milos Uzan and Otega Oweh each recorded 11 points in 20-plus minutes of action. 
  •  The Sooners led for 37-plus minutes and dominated the paint, outscoring the stars 50-16. OU's bench scored 46 points, while the OCU second squad managed seven.
  • In total, 12 Sooners appeared in the contest and 11 registered a point. Oklahoma shots 50% (34 of 68) from the field and limited OCU to 27.1% (19-70).

LAST MEETING: SAM HOUSTON

  •  Oklahoma earned the 75-44 victory over Sam Houston and moved to 5-0 in the all-time series against the Bearkats behind double-doubles by Eduardo Najera and Ryan Humphrey.
  • Najera recorded a team-high 18 points and matched Humphrey with a team-best 13 rebounds. Humphrey added 10 points and led the Sooners on the offensive glass, wrangling seven boards. Oleg Reztsov poured in 15 points off the bench and Michael Johnson tallied a game-high four assists.
  • Oklahoma controlled the boards, outrebounding Sam Houston 57-39. The Sooners also swiped 13 steals on the night.

UP NEXT
Oklahoma continues its homestand to open the season on Friday, Nov. 11, hosting Arkansas - Pine Bluff at Lloyd Noble Center. Tip is schedule for 7 p.m.
