Sooners Fall to Bearkats on Last-Second Shot

November 07, 2022 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's basketball dropped its season opener on a last-second shot to Sam Houston 52-51 Monday night at Lloyd Noble Center.

SHSU's Lamar Wilkerson buried a 3-pointer with under four seconds left, giving the Bearkats the one-point advantage.

"This is not going to define us," said head men's basketball coach Porter Moser. "How we react from this, will define us. That is going to define us. I only know one way – look in the mirror, find out where we are going to get better, have all of them do the same and be closer than we have ever been."

Oklahoma led for 37-plus minutes and entered halftime up 26-19.

The Sooner defense clamped down to open the second half and held the Bearkats to 10 points through the first 11 minutes, including a five minute scoreless streak.

Oklahoma found its offensive rhythm during the defensive lockdown and extended its lead to 43-29 after Milos Uzan drained a pair of free throws. Four Sooners scored during the 8-0 run.

With under five minutes left, SHSU scored on seven of its last eight possessions, including the last second shot.

Grant Sherfield led the Sooners with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Tanner Groves added 11 points, three blocks and a team-best nine rebounds. Jacob Groves recorded 11 points and wrangled five boards.

Six Sooners made their first appearance in the Crimson and Cream.
