NORMAN – University of Oklahoma men's basketball point guard Grant Sherfield was named to the 2023 Bob Cousy Award Watch List as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Monday.
The annual award is in its 20th year and recognizes the top point guard in NCAA Division I men's basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
"The Hall of Fame is honored to present the Bob Cousy Award to the best point guard in the collegiate game for the 20th consecutive year," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "This year's class of point guards that have been named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List truly embody the style and reputation of the 'Houdini of the Hardwood,' and we look forward to watching their playmaking ability take center stage this season."
Sherfield, a 6-2 senior point guard from Fort Worth, Texas, was also voted the 2022-23 Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year by the league head coaches.
Sherfield started his college career at Wichita State before transferring to Nevada for the last two seasons. Sherfield started 28 games for the Pack last season and boasted a team-high 35.7 minutes per game.
He tallied a team-best 19.1 points per contest and led the Mountain West and finished fourth in the NCAA in assists per game (6.4). Sherfield added 4.2 rebounds per contest and was named to the All-Mountain West Third Team. Following his sophomore campaign, he was voted Mountain West Newcomer of the Year.
Sherfield and the Sooners open their 2022-23 season with an exhibition against Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
