Gabriel Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

NORMAN — Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after passing for 403 yards and accounting for three touchdowns in the Sooners' 52-42 win over Kansas on Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
The redshirt junior completed 29 of 42 passes (69%) and threw for two touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 37 yards and a TD. Gabriel's 403 passing yards and 440 total offensive yards were both the second most by a Big 12 player this year and most in a conference game. He threw for 304 yards in the first half alone, marking OU's first 300-yard passing half in three seasons. Gabriel's performance helped the Sooners amass 701 yards of offense, their most against a Big 12 opponent in four years and the most by a Big 12 team this season (fourth most nationally).
This season, Gabriel has completed 114 of 175 passes (65%) for 1,618 yards and 13 touchdowns, and has rushed 35 times for 163 yards (4.7 average) and three TDs. The Mililani, Hawaii, product ranks among the top quarterbacks nationally in passing efficiency rating (166.2; 15th), yards per pass attempt (9.3; 14th) and yards per pass completion (14.2; 15th).
This is Gabriel's second Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor this season. He was also recognized for his performance in OU's 33-3 win over Kent State on Sept. 10.
Oklahoma, which is off this week, will play at Iowa State on Oct. 29 in Ames, Iowa. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. on FS1.
