Sooners Sweep Wyoming in Home Opener

NORMAN — The No. 19 Oklahoma women's tennis team swept its season-opening competition Monday, shutting out Wyoming by a score of 7-0 at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

"They took all the things we've been working on in practice, all the energy, and used it in the match today," said head coach Audra Cohen. "They brought energy for each other and that's something we've talked a lot about and they did it really well."

The Sooners opened up the match by claiming the doubles point. Freshmen Emma Staker and Anchisa Chanta earned the first win against Ana Fernandez and Lucia Malinak, 6-0, on court three. The Corley sisters, Ivana and Carmen, downed Maria Oreshkina and Ida Krause,6-1, at the No. 1 spot to clinch the point. Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva controlled court two against Noesjka Brink and Mihaela Kaftanova with an unfinished score of 4-2.

Sleeth was the first Sooner to finish her match, defeating Fernandez, 6-0, 6-0, on court three. Staker continued the victory, tallying a, 6-0, 6-0, win on court six over Serina Abriola. Chanta clinched the match for Oklahoma, earning a 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot against Krause.

Pisareva took a win over Malinak, 6-2, 6-0, on court five, while Ivana Corley defeated Brink, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. Carmen Corley closed out the first match of the season, defeating Oreshkina 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) in a tiebreaker at the top line.
