OU Prevails Over Purdue

NORMAN — The No. 24 Oklahoma men's tennis team closed their trio of competitions with a 6-1 victory over Purdue at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Monday.
OU (3-0) opened the match with the doubles point and tallied singles wins on five courts to put away the Boilermakers.
"Today was a great match for our guys to get out there and play against a really good Purdue team," head coach Nick Crowell said. "They came in here and fought really hard."
"The doubles point was close and it was good. Our guys got tested early and we came through on some big break points that we needed at No. 1 and 3."
In doubles, Mason Beiler and Nathan Han finished first for the Sooners with a 6-3 win over Purdue's Andre Suzanne and Rohan Sachdev on court three. Welsh Hotard and Alex Martinez continued their successful pairing, clinching the doubles point for OU with a 6-4 victory over Sebastian Welch and Michal Wozniak at the top line.
When play was halted, Baptiste Anselmo and Mark Mandlik were up 4-3 against Gabriele Brancatelli and Tomasz Dudek onn court two.
Hotard was the first Sooner to strike, notching a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Julen Morgan on court six, giving OU a 2-0 advantage.
"Welsh took care of business pretty quick," Crowell said. "It was really important for him to get off 6-2, 6-2."
Purdue got on the board as Han fell to Brancatelli 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 line. The Sooners responded with a 6-4, 6-1 victory for Martinez over Dudek at the No. 2 spot.
"Alex cleaned it up 6-1 in the second set and Mark clinched it down there at No. 3," Crowell said. "Overall, it was a great day and the guys finished it off 6-1, so it was a fun day."
No. 49 Mandlik clinched the match for OU with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Wozniak on court three.
The remaining courts played out. No. 31 Beiler defeated Welch 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. Justin Schlageter closed out the day for OU, beating Sachdev 6-7 (4), 6-4, 1-0 [8] on court six.
UP NEXT
The Sooners host a pair of matches, Jan. 22 and 23, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. OU kicks off competition against Abilene Christian at noon CT on Jan. 22. The squad will then face Nebraska at 1 p.m. on Jan. 23. Admission is free to both matches.
