NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team took sole possession of second place in the Big 12 on Saturday by beating TCU, 100-71. The Sooners' 100 points scored are the second most for the program in a Big 12 game.
No. 23 Oklahoma (15-2, 4-1) took the lead off a
Liz Scott layup at the 7:48 mark of the first quarter and led TCU (5-8, 1-3) until the final whistle blew in Norman.
Madi Williams led the way with her 21st career double-double and
Skylar Vann poured in 20 points off the bench.
"I thought we came out ready and today was really fun," head coach
Jennie Baranczyk said. "You go as far as your seniors go, and I thought that
Madi Williams was incredible today for the whole game. I'm really proud of everybody for just responding today. We continue to face adversity here and there and we continue to respond."
Scott and Vann got the Sooners off on the right foot as the two combined for the Sooners' first 15 points as OU opened an early lead over the Horned Frogs in the opening frame.
Kennady Tucker tallied four of her nine points in the first as the Sooners took a 24-15 lead into the second.
Oklahoma, the nation's second-leading scoring offense, caught fire in the second quarter, making 10 of its 18 attempts, including four from deep. Then, Williams began her takeover of the contest, tallying eight in the frame to power the Sooners to a 49-33 halftime advantage.
TCU launched its most threatening run of the day at the start of the third when it rattled off a 7-2 run to cut the OU lead back to 11 before the Sooners answered with an 8-0 run of their own to rebuild the lead. The Sooners outpaced the Horned Frogs 26-23 as Oklahoma grew its advantage to 19 by the end of the frame.
Baranczyk's team put the game away at the start of the fourth quarter when
Nevaeh Tot, who tallied her first start of the season, registered a bucket followed by back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers from
Kaley Perkins and
Taylor Robertson, giving OU a 30-point lead with 8:05 remaining in the contest. The two teams traded runs for the rest of the game before the buzzer sounded and OU secured the 29-point, 100-71 victory. The 29-point margin of victory is tied for the 10th-largest in an OU conference win in the last decade.
The Sooners' 100-point output is its second-highest of the season and its second-most all-time in a Big 12 game, trailing only a 102-point outing vs. Colorado in 2001. Four Sooners hit double figures, led by Williams' 21 and Vann's 20 as Scott and Tot added 16 points apiece. Tucker and Perkins poured in nine more each, and Robertson hit a pair of 3-pointers to finish with six points. Williams also grabbed a game-high 11 boards to secure the double-double, her seventh of the season.
OU had its most efficient game of the season offensively, shooting 53.6% (37-69) from the field to mark a season-high in field-goal percentage while tying its high mark for made field goals. The Sooners', who lead the country in assists per game with 20.4, dished out 24 vs. TCU led by Robertson's six dimes. The Sooners sunk 11 3-pointers in the win, marking the 11th time in 17 games the team has hit double-digit treys – two more than anyone else in the country.
Saturday's win marks the 15th win of the season for Oklahoma as the Sooners reached 15 wins faster than any team in program history in terms of the calendar date.
"There isn't a cap on this team in terms of potential," Baranczyk added. "Today was a bigger game than anybody actually understands because we went through a lot today. So for us to be able to handle that and step on the floor and have a win like this shows me that our ceiling continues to rise."
The Sooners hit the road as they continue their march through Big 12 play on Jan. 19 at West Virginia (8-5, 1-2) in Morgantown. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. CT tip on ESPN+.
