Record Day Earns Brkic Big 12 Weekly Honor

NORMAN – Oklahoma kicker Gabe Brkic was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week after tying an FBS record with his three field goal makes of at least 50 yards (51, 56 and 55) in Oklahoma's 40-35 win over Tulane on Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
The redshirt junior from Chardon, Ohio, also made a 26-yarder and finished the day 4-for-5, tying a school record for makes in a game (11th time in school history and third time by Brkic). Prior to Saturday, no Sooner had ever made more than one 50-plus-yard field goal in a game.
Brkic's 56-yarder to end the first half tied as the third-longest in school history and was the longest since 1977. His 51- and 56-yarders stand as the longest made field goals in a season opener in school history. He was also 4 for 4 on PAT attempts against Tulane.
Brkic sits atop OU's career chart for field goal conversion percentage at .854 (41 for 48) and has made all 106 of his PAT tries. His eight career field goals of at least 50 yards are twice as many as the Sooners with the next most (Tony DiRienzo and Uwe von Schamann had four each), and his seven such boots since the start of the 2020 season lead the nation. He is tied with R.D. Lashar for OU's all-time lead in field goal makes of at least 40 yards (14).
This is the first career weekly Big 12 honor for Brkic.
Oklahoma (1-0) is back home Saturday to face Western Carolina (0-1) at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
