NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Air Force at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane, Wash.
The Sooners (1-3) took the match, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-16, over the Falcons (0-5). OU out-hit Air Force .184 to .130 and held the advantage in kills with 46 to the Falcon's 42.
OU also led in digs (60-57), assists (39-34) and blocks (14.0-9.0).
Freshman
Megan Wilson had another exceptional night on offense, tallying 15 kills on a .317 clip. Senior
Paige Anderson and freshman
Kristen Birmingham each recorded seven kills. Making her first appearance of the season,
Olivia LittleJim added six kills of her own on a .278 clip.
Freshman
Peyton Dunn recorded her fourth-straight match with at least 30 assists as she tallied 31 on the night. Dunn added 11 digs for her second-straight double-double.
Defensively, the Sooners were led by freshman
Callie Kemohah's 14 digs. Curtis added 10 and sophomore
Sam Anthony chipped in eight. The Sooners tallied 14.0 blocks to Air Force's 9.0 with Anderson tallying seven, including three solo blocks. Birmingham and sophomore
Tyler Alcorn each got in on four blocks.
OU took the tightly contested first set, 25-23. Air Force took an early 4-0 lead, but the Sooner used a 7-3 run to tie the match at 7-all. The teams traded points, seeing 10 ties and five lead changes throughout the set. Davison's fourth kill of the match gave Oklahoma match point and an error by the Falcons allowed the Sooners to close out the set.
Air Force took control early in the second set as the Sooners chipped away at the lead. A service ace from Dunn gave Oklahoma its first lead of the night at 14-13. The Falcons used a 10-2 run at the end of the match to take the set, 25-19.
The Sooners opened the third set strong as Wilson notched three kills to give OU a 4-2 lead. A 7-4 run gave Oklahoma a 15-7 lead as
Olivia LittleJim recorded her first kill of the night. Birmingham came up big with a solo block late in the set to keep the OU lead at five, 19-14. An error by the Falcons closed out a 4-0 run by the Sooners who took set three, 25-18.
OU kept the momentum rolling in the fourth set to take the match with a 25-16 set win. A 5-2 run saw back-to-back-back kills form Anderson, Wilson and
Kelsey Carrington as the Sooners doubled up the Falcons, 14-7.
Paige Anderson closed out the set and the match with a kill to hand OU its first victory of the year.
The Sooners will be back on the court Saturday at 1 p.m. to face Seattle on the second day of the Gonzaga Invitational.
