NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team picked up its first sweep of the season as it took down Seattle, 3-0, on day two of the Gonzaga Invitational.
OU (2-3) defeated Seattle (1-6) 25-20, 25-17, 25-17. The Sooners out-hit the Redhawks .302 to .132 as they recorded their best offensive performance of the season.
OU also led in kills (42-26), digs (28-24), assists (40-25), blocks (9.0-2.0) and service aces (6-2).
Megan Wilson recorded her fifth-consecutive game with at least 15 kills as she tallied 17 on a .353 clip.
Paige Anderson was just shy of the double-digit mark as she notched nine kills on a team-best .375 clip.
Peyton Dunn recorded her fifth match of at least 30 assists with 35.
Defensively,
Callie Kemohah and
Olivia LittleJim led the way with seven kills each. LittleJim also chipped in six kills on the day. Of the team's nine blocks,
Kelsey Carrington assisted on five with Anderson and Wilson getting a hand on three apiece.
OU took the first set, 25-20. Through the first 34 points of the match, the two teams saw 13 ties and five lead changes. The Sooners took control with a 3-0 run and three-straight kills from Anderson, Dunn and Wilson to take a 20-17 lead. A 5-3 run closed out the set as Carrington and
Kristen Birmingham closed out the first set victory with a block.
The second set saw the two teams trade points as they remained tied at 12-all. Kills from Carrington and Wilson, followed by a Carrington and Curtis block gave OU a 15-12 advantage. Seattle used a run of their own to pull within two at 17-15 but an 8-2 run by the Sooners closed it out at 25-17. Wilson dominated in the back half as she notched four-straight kills to clinch the second set.
The Sooners dominated in the deciding third set, 25-17. OU opened the set on a 5-0 run and increased that to 9-1 forcing a Seattle timeout. The Redhawks fought back, forcing an OU timeout after making a 4-0 run to cut the Sooner lead to 13-8. Anderson was dominant in the final set for the Sooners, recording three-straight kills to get the Sooners to a 21-13 lead. Curtis earned the solo block to end the match and give OU its first sweep of the year.
The Sooners will close out the Gonzaga Invitational on Sunday at 4 p.m. CT against host Gonzaga. The match will be streamed for free on the WCC Network.
