Richards' Golden Goal Sends Sooners Past KC

September 03, 2021 | Soccer

The Sooners, playing with 10 after a red card, won their second straight 2OT game on Friday

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma soccer team collected its second straight double-overtime victory Friday night, beating Kansas City 2-1 off a golden header from senior Jazzy Richards.

The Sooners (3-2-0) dominated the Roos (2-3-0) on the stat sheet, outshooting KC 26-3 and holding a 8-3 corner advantage.

Richards headed in the game-winner in the 103rd minute off a corner from freshman Leonie Weber after the Roos tied the game in the 71st minute.

"The expectation at OU is to win and get a result in the face of adversity," head coach Mark Carr said. "I told the team after the game that we can't play to our opponent, and that we must play to our standard. But at the same time, I'm so proud of them for their determination and will to win.

"The character and grit that the team showed, down a player, was just really important for us as a program."

OU played down a player the last 16 minutes of regulation and all of overtime after senior Olivia Odle collected her second yellow card of the game.

The Sooners struck early on a goal from senior Bri Amos in the seventh minute, her second of the season, off assists from freshman Ella Pappas and junior Alexis Strickland. The OU defense did their part, allowing the Roos just three shots as senior goalkeeper Nikki Panas collected one save.

Sophomore Cailey England fired a team-high six shots, putting three on goal. Amos had four chances, converting one, while Richards collected her second goal of the season on three shots. Eight additional Sooners registered a shot in the contest with four putting shots on goal.

Friday's win marks the first time since 2019 the Sooners have won multiple overtime matches and the first time in at least 20 years that OU has won back-to-back overtime matches.

"We've got to be better on Sunday if we want to win," Carr added. "You look at the score sheet and see that we put 26 shots up tonight but only got two goals.

"We've got to be better around the net when it comes to our finishing. We'll need to play with more intensity than we did tonight if we want to get better and get results."

The Sooners return to the pitch Sunday at 5 p.m. CT versus North Texas (3-1-1) at John Crain Field. The game can be seen on Bally Sports Oklahoma and tickets are available via SoonerSports.com/tickets.
