Sooners Earn Four-Set Victory Over SMU

September 16, 2021 | Volleyball

DALLAS – A trio of Sooners finished with double-digit kills in Oklahoma volleyball's four-set victory (20-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23) over SMU (3-6) Thursday night at Moody Coliseum.

Savannah Davison led the OU (6-5) attack, registering 19 kills on 44 attempts with only two errors to finish with a .386 clip. Davison also tallied eight digs with two blocks to finish with a match-high 20 points. Peyton Dunn paced the Oklahoma offense with 41 assists and recorded a double-double with 11 digs, while adding six blocks.

Megan Wilson and Paige Anderson recorded 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Anderson tallied an impressive .529 hitting percentage, making only one attack error on 17 attempts.

The Sooners and Mustangs were evenly matched through the first set with each team tallying 32 attack attempts and 15 kills.

With SMU holding a 19-17 advantage in the first set, Wilson recorded a kill to bring the Sooners within one before Dunn and Kelsey Carrington recorded a block to notch the set at 19-all. SMU found success after the block, finishing the set on a 6-1 run.

Both sides fought back-and-forth to start the second set before the Sooners tallied a 7-1 run to push the OU lead to 13-7 on a Davison kill. SMU narrowed the Oklahoma advantage to three at 17-14 before OU captured control of the set, finishing on an 8-2 run. A kill by Anderson pushed OU to 24-16 before an attack error by the Mustangs closed out the set to tie the match at one set each.

OU continued its momentum into the third set, pulling away after the 9-all tie. The Sooners rattled off four-answered points and maintained an advantage through the remainder of the set. OU capitalized on Mustang mistakes late in the set after an attack error and service error moved the Oklahoma lead to 20-15.

Both sides split the final 10 points with the Sooners earning the set victory and 2-1 set advantage on a kill by Wilson. OU and SMU were fairly matched in the third set with the Sooners holding a 14 to 13 kill advantage with each side recording 31 and 33 attack attempts, respectively.

In the fourth and decisive set, SMU powered forward, holding an advantage after an attack error by the Sooners at 5-4 until a block by Dunn and Anderson tied the score at 20-all. The Mustangs captured the next point before an attack error by SMU and a kill by Anderson pushed the Sooners ahead. SMU tied the score at 23-all before Wilson tallied the final two kills to win the Sooners' second match of the week.
