Sooners Drop Big 12 Opener in Four

September 24, 2021 | Volleyball

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three Sooners notched double-digit kills as the Oklahoma volleyball team fell in four sets (25-23, 25-14, 21-25, 25-22) to West Virginia in the first game of league play.

The two teams were matched fairly evenly both recording 55 kills and 10.0 blocks. The Mountaineers (11-1) narrowly led the Sooners (6-6) in assists (50-46) and digs (65-63).
Paige Anderson led the offensive attack with 16 kills on a .429 clip. Anderson was just one kill shy of her career-high of 17 kills and had just four errors in the match. Savannah Davison chipped in 15 kills and Megan Wilson added 12.

Back for the first time in 2021, Sarah Sanders chipped in eight kills and two blocks.

Peyton Dunn notched 42 kills while also getting in on five blocks for the Sooners.

Defensively, Olivia LittleJim led the Sooners with 17 digs, followed by 14 from libero Callie Kemohah. Sam Anthony added 10 digs of her own. Tyler Alcorn recorded a team-best six blocks as Anderson added four.

The Sooners used a 4-0 run to run out to an 8-6 lead and force an error from the Mountaineers. With the teams trading runs, the Mountaineers pulled ahead by three, before a kill from Anderson tied things at 22-all. Facing match point, Davison earned a kill to bring OU within one. A kill from Adrian Ell secured set one for West Virginia, 25-23.

The Mountaineers led 17-11 in the second set with Anderson getting a kill to slow the Mountaineer run. The deficit was too much for OU to overcome as they dropped the second set, 25-14.

Trailing 2-0 in the match, OU came out firing in set three. The Sooners went up 9-0 before the Mountaineers were able to find the scoreboard. West Virginia pulled within three at 16-13 but back-to-back kills from Wilson pushed OU back to a five-point lead. Anderson's 14th kill of the match secured the 25-21 third-set win.

The Sooners took the early lead in set four but a Mountaineer run allowed West Virginia to take a 6-5 lead. West Virginia would continue to control the tempo of the fourth set, keeping the Sooners out of reach as the Mountaineers took a 16-11 lead. Wilson's 11th kill of the night pulled OU within two at 17-15. A block from Anderson and Sanders kept the Sooners at a two-point deficit, 22-20 but West Virginia would close out the set on a 3-0 run to take the match.

The Sooners and Mountaineers will meet on the court again Saturday at 4 p.m. CT.
