ATLANTA – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a tough four-set match to No. 21 Georgia Tech, 3-1, Sunday afternoon inside O'Keefe Gymnasium in the finale of the Georgia Tech Classic.
Georgia Tech took the match, 27-29, 25-14, 25-18, 25-22. The Yellow Jackets out-hit the Sooners .302 to .145 and held the advantage in kills, 55-48. Georgia Tech also led in digs (52-40) and assists (49-45).
Megan Wilson and
Savannah Davison led the offensive attack with 18 and 15 kills, respectively. Wilson also chipped in a team-best three service aces.
Peyton Dunn picked up 36 assists to go with four kills and seven digs.
Callie Kemohah notched 13 digs on the day along with four assists and two service aces.
Sam Anthony added seven digs of her own.
Of the team's eight blocks,
Paige Anderson and
Kristen Birmingham each chipped in four.
OU took set one, 29-27. The Sooners jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead over the Jackets as Wilson started 3-for-3 to get the momentum going. Tech used a 5-0 run to take an 8-7 lead and force OU into calling timeout. The Sooners fought back and the teams traded points until the Sooners used a 3-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. Georgia Tech pulled even at 22-all and the set saw five set points until a Davison kill clinched the victory for OU.
The Sooners struggled to keep the momentum going in set two, falling 25-14. The Jackets finished the set on a 7-0 run as they led wire-to-wire. In set three, Georgia Tech had a small lead early at 12-10. A 5-0 gave the Jackets a 17-10 lead. The Sooners fought to make a comeback in the end, ultimately falling 25-18.
Georgia Tech clinched the match with a 25-22 fourth set victory. The Sooners held an early lead, 6-4, as Wilson picked up a service ace to give OU a two-point advantage. An
Olivia LittleJim kill made it 11-9 before the Jackets pulled even at 13-all. Birmingham put the Sooners back in front, 15-14, with her third kill of the match. Tech earned the lead at 20-19 but a Kemohah ace tied things at 21-21. The Jackets closed out the set on a 4-1 run to take the match, 3-1.
The Sooners are back in action at home for the first time since August when they host Abilene Christian on Tuesday at 5 p.m. OU will also face SMU in Dallas on Thursday at 7 p.m.
