Weber Named International Player to Watch

August 11, 2021 | Soccer

NORMAN – Oklahoma freshman forward Leonie Weber was named one of the nation's top international women's college soccer players to watch by Top Drawer Soccer on Wednesday.

The Munich, Germany, product arrives in Norman as one of the top international players after helping lead FC Bayern Munich II to a league title in 2019. She netted 10 goals in 44 matches for the Bavarian side over her club career.

"It's great to see Leo recognized on the national level," second-year coach Mark Carr said. "I've had the privilege to watch her here the last weeks and she can do things with the ball that other players just can't. That was apparent in her goal versus Air Force earlier this week. We're excited to see how she grows and what she can accomplish here at Oklahoma."

Weber's success on the pitch goes deeper than the club level, as she is a member of the German women's national team program and competed for Germany's U17 team at the U17 World Cup in Uruguay in 2018. At the World Cup, the freshman helped guide the German side through a tumultuous group stage and into the quarterfinal.

She had continued prep success in high school, playing for Wittelsbacher Gymnasium Munchen and tallying a team-high 55 goals in 23 matches.

Weber made an immediate impact at Oklahoma, scoring a goal in the third minute of OU's exhibition win over Air Force on August 9.

Top Drawer Soccer lists Weber second on their list of international prospects, and she joins her club teammate and new WVU Mountaineer Lisa Schoeppl as one of two Big 12 players on the list.

"Head coach Mark Carr is putting in the work to improve Oklahoma, and he's dotted the 2021 class with a handful of players from Europe and Canada," Top Drawer said. "Weber is the one to watch, as she's an experienced German youth international and striker making the move from Bayern Munich."

Weber and the Sooners open their season on Aug. 19 at Houston at 7 p.m.
