Sooners Shutout Red Raiders Twice

April 24, 2021 | Softball

NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (36-1, 11-0) collected two wins Saturday in its doubleheader over Texas Tech (18-22, 2-12). The Sooners won game one 15-0 for their 27th run-rule victory of the season prior to a 5-0 game two win paced by Shannon Saile's 13 strikeouts.

Game One: OU 15, Texas Tech 0 (5 innings)

The Sooners put up 15 runs for the seventh time this season in Saturday's first contest, powered by home runs from senior Jana Johns and junior Grace Green and three runs batted in from sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo and senior captain Lynnsie Elam.

OU scored three runs on three hits and a Tech error in the bottom of the first to open the scoring. Donihoo batted in her first run of the game on an RBI single to plate senior Jocelyn Alo before Elam laced a two-RBI single through the right side.

Oklahoma put up six more runs on two hits and an error in the second starting with a sacrifice fly from junior Grace Lyons. After Tiare Jennings scored on an error from the Tech second baseman, Donihoo drew a bases-loaded walk to plate another OU run. Elam and senior Taylon Snow brought in the final trio of runs in the frame on an RBI groundout and two-RBI double, respectively.

Another six runs crossed home for the Sooners in the third inning. Johns and Green hit a pair of two-run home runs in the frame, marking the then-24th time OU has hit two blasts in one inning in 2021. Johns and Jennings would make it 25 in the second contest of the day. Donihoo batted in her third run of the game on a double down the left line before a Jennings RBI single would close the scoring.

Redshirt senior Giselle Juarez collected her team-best 13th win of the season, going three shutout innings and allowing just two hits to go with four strikeouts. Redshirt sophomore Brooke Vestal and sophomore Olivia Rains combined to close the shutout, each going an inning with Rains striking out three and Vestal retiring one by way of the K. Neither gave up a hit in the final two innings.

Game Two: OU 5, Texas Tech 0

On senior weekend, redshirt senior Shannon Saile was the story in game two of the doubleheader. Saile tossed an OU career-high 13 strikeouts in a three-hit, complete-game shutout.

Sophomore Kinzie Hansen got things started early for the OU offense, ripping a laser of a double to right center to plate Jennings in the bottom of the first.

After two scoreless innings, Johns and Jennings broke the game open with back-to-back home runs in the fourth. It was Johns' ninth of the season and second of the day and Jennings' 21st of her frosh campaign. It marked the 12th time this season that the Sooners have hit home runs in consecutive at-bats.

Jennings wasn't finished after her solo home run in the fourth, batting in her second run of the game in the sixth inning on a double to right center.

Saile collected her 11th win of the season and struck out 13 of the 25 batters she faced, scattering just three Red Raider hits.

With the two Saturday wins, Oklahoma has won 54 consecutive Big 12 regular season games and their 58th straight conference series. Additionally, the Sooners collected their nation-best 18th and 19th shutouts of the season.

The teams return to action at Marita Hynes Field in Norman Sunday at noon CT for the series finale. The game can be seen on SoonerSports.tv and heard via The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app. Oklahoma will honor its three redshirt seniors following the game, Giselle Juarez, Nicole Mendes and Shannon Saile.
