OU Sweeps Tech on Record-Setting Senior Day

April 25, 2021 | Softball

NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (37-1, 12-0) sent its three redshirt seniors, Giselle Juarez, Nicole Mendes and Shannon Saile, out with a bang in their final regular season game at Marita Hynes Field.

Oklahoma beat Texas Tech 20-0 in five innings, powered by an 18-run fourth inning that set a program record and tied for second in NCAA history for runs in an inning.

OU swept the Red Raiders on the weekend, outscoring Tech 40-0 in the three-game series and outhitting the Red Raiders 34-8.

Senior Jocelyn Alo put the Sooners on top early in Sunday's game three with her nation-best 24th home run of the season, launching a two-run shot to right field in the first inning.

The Sooners exploded for 18 runs on 14 hits and an error in the fourth inning, sending 23 batters to the plate in the frame and hitting two home runs.

In the inning, Alo and senior Taylon Snow led the team with four runs batted in a piece, with three of Snow's RBIs coming on her second home run of the season and just the fourth of her career. Senior Jana Johns batted in three on a three-run home run to right field, her 10th of the season. Redshirt senior Nicole Mendes and freshman Jayda Coleman each brought in a pair. Sophomores Kinzie Hansen and Rylie Boone brought in one run a piece on a single and groundout, respectively.

Redshirt seniors Giselle Juarez and Shannon Saile combined for the third consecutive shutout by OU's pitching staff. Juarez claimed her 13th win of the season in the circle, going four innings and giving up just two hits to the Red Raiders and no walks to go with five strikeouts.

Saile pitched the fifth and final inning and allowed one hit to the four batters she faced, striking out one.

Alo paced the Sooners at the plate with six RBIs in a 4-for-5, three runs scored showing. Snow brought in four runs and scored a pair while Johns went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and three runs scored.

Nine Sooners recorded a hit in the game with four registering multiple hits and four players batting in multiple runs.

NOTES & NUMBERS

• The fourth inning marked the most runs scored in an inning in program history and tied for the second most in NCAA history, second only to College of Charleston's 29 on Feb. 11, 2004 (2nd inn.) vs. Savannah State and sharing the mark with Canisius' 18 mark on May 1, 1985 (2nd inn.) vs. Roberts Wesleyan.

• Oklahoma hit two home runs in an inning for the second consecutive game and the 26th time of 2021.

• Sunday's game was the 19th of the season in which OU has hit three-plus home runs.

• Oklahoma has hit a nation-best 111 home runs on the year, just four behind the 2019 OU team's 115 program-record mark.

• It was the fifth game this season Oklahoma has put up 20-plus runs.

• Sunday's contest was OU's 28th run-rule victory of 2021, recently surpassing the program record for run rules in a season (25, 2019 & 2013).

• Oklahoma has won 55 consecutive Big 12 regular season games and their 58th straight conference series.

• Oklahoma brought its shutout tally to 20 on the season, an NCAA best in 2021.

• The Sooners put up 10-plus runs in one inning for the sixth time of 2021.

• Senior Taylon Snow's second home run of the season in the fourth inning makes it 11 Sooners with multiple home runs in 2021.

• Senior Jocelyn Alo recorded six RBIs Sunday, the most for a Sooner since freshman Tiare Jennings brought in six in the third game of the Iowa State series on March 28. It was the third time this season a Sooner has batted in six runs, with Jennings' accomplishing the feat twice and Alo once.

• Sunday's game marked the third game of Alo's career with six-plus RBIs (7 vs. Loyola Marymount, March 14, 2019; 6 vs. Texas Tech March 25, 2018).

• Alo leads the country in home runs (24) and RBIs (66). Jennings ranks second in the country with 63 runs batted in and third in home runs (21).

Nicole Mendes hit her second triple of the season in Sunday's game, bringing her career triple number to 13, good for third most in program history and just four behind the program-record 17 from Tammy Allard (1979-81).

• Senior Jana Johns hit a home run in her third consecutive game Sunday, one in all three of the series. It marks the second time in Johns' career she has accomplished feat, doing so in all three games of a series at Missouri May 3-5, 2019, in her sophomore season with South Carolina.

The top-ranked Sooners make another quick turnaround to head to Waco, Texas, for a Tuesday doubleheader with Baylor, April 27 at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. CT. Both games will be available to watch on ESPNU with Beth Mowins and Michele Smith on the call.

The games can be heard on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app with OU play-by-play announcer Chris Plank calling the action.
