Sooners Knock Off No. 7 OSU in Match Play
April 12, 2021 | Women's Golf
STILLWATER, Okla.Ā -Ā The Oklahoma women's golf team used a strong back nine from trio of Sooners to upset No. 7 Oklahoma State in match play on Monday in Stillwater, knocking off the Cowgirls 3-2.Ā
Veronique Drouin-Luttrell's team split its matches on the day, dropping the morning match 3-2 to Texas Tech before upsetting the Cowgirls in the afternoon. Those results, paired with a win over Tulsa on Sunday, gave the Sooners (2-1) a T1 finish at the event played at the par-72 Stillwater Country Club.Ā
"We played solid golf all weekend," Drouin-Luttrell said. "I'm really proud of everyone for their performance. We had a great match this morning against Texas Tech and came up just short, but coming to Stillwater and beating Oklahoma State was definitely exciting. We had some fantastic matches that went down to the last few holes. This is what team golf is all about, and fighting until the last putt drops."
It was Mikhaela Fortuna who delivered the Bedlam-winning putt on Monday to finish her week with a perfect 3-0 record. The junior's 15 birdies were tied for second-most among all golfers, only one back of OSU's Isabella Fierro. After seeing her lead over OSU's Maddison Tolchard dwindle, the Manila product grew her advantage to two holes before sinking a winning putt on the 17th. Her 5&3 win over Texas Tech's Nielsen in the morning gave the junior a combined 12-shot advantage over her three opponents,Ā more than any other golfer in the field.Ā
Hannah Screen wrapped up her spectacular regular season with a 2-1 weekend, defeating fellow Englishwoman Lianna Bailey 1-up in the Bedlam match. The London, U.K., native went up early, taking a 3-up advantage thru six holes, but by the time the two golfers left the 15th green, the match was all square. Screen would come up big for the Sooners on the par-three 17th, where she left her approach just off the green. The Sooner chipped in to win the hole and take a 1-up lead that she didn't surrender, giving Oklahoma its first win of the match.Ā
Kaitlin Milligan helped power the Sooners to a victory over the Cowgirls, with a wire-to-wire 2&1 win over Rina Tatematsu. The Norman product persevered after seeing her 4-up lead drop to 1-up thru 14, but a strong finish led her and the team to victory. The senior, who played in the Augusta National Women's Amateur last weekend, closed her weekendĀ with a 1-1-1 record after taking on some of the nation's best competition.Ā
Maria Fernanda Martinez shined in the morning session versus Texas Tech, dominating Amy Taylor to win 5&3 before dropping her Bedlam match to fellow Mexican and top-15 player Isabella Fierro, 2&1.Ā
Libby Winans closed her week with a 1-2 record despite playing her opponents even over the three matches. The Richardson, Texas, product dropped both matches on Monday.Ā
Ellen Secor and Hannah Lee both competed as individuals and went 0-3 on the week.Ā
The Sooners will return to Norman this week to prepare for the Big 12 Championship, which tees off on Sunday, April 18, in The Woodlands, Texas, at the Club at Carlton Woods.
"We should have gained some confidence from this weekend," Drouin-Luttrell said. "Hopefully, that confidence and momentum carries into the postseason because we're excited to get rolling!"
Oklahoma owns six conference championships all-time, including two under Drouin-Luttrell in 2012 and 2014.Ā
