Sooners Fall to Jayhawks in Extras

April 10, 2021 | Baseball

NORMAN – Catcher Jimmy Crooks homered twice and third baseman Peyton Graham hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning, but the Oklahoma baseball team fell to Kansas 8-7 in 10 innings Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The Sooners (15-15, 2-6 Big 12) and Jayhawks (18-12, 2-6 Big 12) will play a rubber game at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell Park.

After Kansas scored five runs in the third inning, Crooks led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to put OU on the scoreboard. He then launched a two-run homer in the seventh to bring the Sooners within 7-6. The homers were Crooks' sixth and seventh of the season, tying him for the team lead with first baseman Tyler Hardman. Graham's fourth homer of the season, an opposite-field shot to right, tied the game at 7-all in the bottom of the eighth inning.

A solo home run in the top of the 10th inning by KU second baseman James Cosentino gave the Jayhawks the 8-7 advantage.

Oklahoma strung together five straight hits at the start of the fourth inning to produce four runs. Hardman followed Crooks' homer with a base hit up the middle, and left fielder Diego Muniz, right fielder Brett Squires and second baseman Conor McKenna hit consecutive doubles to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Kansas took a 5-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by third baseman Skyler Messinger, a fielder's choice and a three-run home run by catcher Anthony Tulimero. In the sixth inning, center fielder Tavian Josenberger hit an RBI triple and Cosentino scored on a fielder's choice. With one out, Squires caught a fly ball in right field and fired a strike to Crooks at the plate in time to beat the tagging runner to end the inning and prevent any further damage.

Carson Carter tossed 2.0 scoreless frames in relief, allowing only two hits – singles in the seventh and eighth innings. Jason Ruffcorn (2-1) pitched the final two innings while KU's John Ulane (1-0) earned the win with 2.1 relief innings.
