Balanced Attack Leads OU to Two Wins
March 06, 2021 | Softball
NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (15-0) stacked two more wins Saturday, including a top-25 victory, on day two of the Courtyard Marriott Tournament.
The Sooners beat their second ranked opponent of the season in game one of the day, topping No. 18/17 Missouri, 5-2. Redshirt senior Giselle Juarez impressed with 11 strikeouts in a complete-game performance, while OU's offense hit a trio of home runs and finished with 10 hits.
Following a solo home run from Missouri's Emma Raabe in the top of the second, Oklahoma responded with four unanswered runs beginning with sophomore Kinzie Hansen's seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the second to tie the game.
Hansen brought in another OU run in the fourth on a single down the left line that plated redshirt senior Nicole Mendes. Senior Jocelyn Alo and freshman Tiare Jennings delivered consecutive home runs in the fifth to open the game up for the Sooners.
The Tigers got one run back on a solo shot to right center from Kendyll Bailey in the sixth. Jennings responded in the bottom frame of the inning with her second RBI on a single to right to plate fellow freshman Jayda Coleman to bring the final score to 5-2, OU.
Jennings paced OU in the box with a perfect 4-for-4 outing with two RBIs and one home run. It marked her eighth multiple hit game and ninth multi-RBI contest of her freshman campaign.
Hansen did her part, knocking two hits in her three at bats for two RBIs and launching the one homer.
Juarez finished her first complete game of 2021 with 11 strikeouts to just three hits, two earned runs and zero walks.
Oklahoma turned around for an evening matchup with Louisiana Monroe, breezing by the Warhawks in run-rule fashion, 9-0. The win marked OU's 11th mercy-rule victory of the season and ninth shutout.
After a slow start, the offense woke up in the third inning with seven runs on five hits, powered by a pair of runs batted in by senior captain Lynnsie Elam. Elam led OU in hits in the night cap with a 2-for-2 performance that included her two runs batted in.
Back-to-back solo homers from Alo and Hansen in the fourth, each their second on the day, brought the game into run-rule territory at 9-0, OU.
Alo brought her total to 12 home runs on the season in OU's 15 games, hitting a home run in 12 of OU's 15 contests. Her round-tripper against ULM moved her into sole possession of second place on OU's career home run list with 66, moving past Shelby Pendley's 65. The NCAA home run record holder Lauren Chamberlain ranks first in program and NCAA history with 95.
Redshirt senior Shannon Saile collected the win in the circle for OU with 3.1 innings pitched, four strikeouts, two walks and one hit. Sophomores Macy McAdoo and Brooke Vestal combined to close for the Sooners, allowing no hits with McAdoo walking three and striking out one.
