NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team finished the Courtyard Marriott Tournament in Norman with two run-rule, shutout victories Sunday, beating No. 18/17 Missouri 11-0 and Sam Houston, 17-0.
The wins bring OU's run-rule tally to 13 on the season and shutout count to 11 for 2021.
The team completed its first sweep of a ranked opponent in the first matchup of the day by beating Missouri behind five home runs and a pitching gem from redshirt senior Shannon Saile. Three OU pitchers combined for the second perfect game of the season in the second victory of the day over Sam Houston, while the offense blasted six more home runs.
In Sunday's game one, Saile tossed eight strikeouts in a complete-game performance, allowing just two hits, no runs and one walk to collect her fifth win in the circle of 2021.
The offense was yet again clicking for OU with freshmen Jayda Coleman and Tiare Jennings each hitting two home runs in the game and sophomore Kinzie Hansen launching the fifth of OU's five round-trippers.
Coleman and Hansen both finished a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while Jennings went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Five Sooners registered multiple hits versus Missouri with seven of OU's 12 batters in the game recording a base hit.
Oklahoma's balanced attack showed in the tournament cap against Sam Houston Sunday night. Redshirt sophomore Brooke Vestal and sophomores Alanna Thiede and Olivia Rains combined to throw OU's second perfect game of the season with Vestal and Thiede going two innings a piece and Rains throwing the fifth and final frame.
Thiede collected the win with one strikeout while Rains K'ed two and Vestal retired one via strikeout.
Oklahoma's bats woke up in the third inning beginning with Jocelyn Alo's 13th blast of the season in OU's 17 games. Alo went yard on a three-run shot to center to bring her hitting streak to 31 consecutive games.
The Sooners recorded 13 runs on 11 hits in the third. Junior Grace Lyons followed Alo in the lineup and made it back-to-back home runs on a solo shot to right. After RBI singles from Taylon Snow and Lynnsie Elam and an RBI double from senior Jana Johns, Jennings knocked her third home run of the day on a three-run shot to center field.
Still in the third inning, sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo got a hold of her third home run of the season to plate two more runs before a bases-loaded walk to Johns capped the scoring.
The fourth inning was highlighted by career firsts from freshmen Paige Knight and Zaida Puni. The two newcomers hit their first home runs as Sooners on two-run shots to center to bring the final to 17-0, OU.
12 Sooners registered a hit versus the Bearkats with five players recording multiple runs batted in.
Oklahoma finished the weekend with 17 home runs in five games to bring their season total to an NCAA-best 61 and are outscoring opponents by a score of 217-18 in 2021.
The top-ranked Sooners return to action at Marita Hynes Field for their first mid-week matchup of the season on Wednesday, March 10 for a matchup with UT-Arlington. The game can be seen on FOX Sports Oklahoma and heard on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) and the TuneIn app.
