No. 1 OU Wins Home Opener

March 05, 2021 | Softball

NORMAN – The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (13-0) opened its home slate with a 7-0 win Friday night over Sam Houston.

Stellar pitching was the story in OU's Courtyard Marriott Tournament opener with freshman Nicole May and sophomore Olivia Rains combining for a one-hit shutout, OU's eighth shutout of the season. Junior Taylon Snow provided plenty of assistance in her second start of the season at first base, registering eight putouts and some eye-popping plays.

May collected the win in the circle, finishing with eight strikeouts, allowing just one hit and one walk to go with zero runs while Rains entered for the final two innings, retiring six straight to close the game.

The Sooners struck early with freshman Jayda Coleman ripping a leadoff double in the bottom of the first before fellow freshman Tiare Jennings batted her in with an RBI groundout.

In the bottom of the third, Snow hit a leadoff triple, quickly getting around the bases on a strike down the left line. Senior Jocelyn Alo brought Snow in on a groundout to put OU up two runs after three.

Following a single from junior Grace Lyons and a groundout and wild pitch that advanced her to third, sophomore Kinzie Hansen registered OU's third RBI groundout to plate Lyons.

Senior captain Lynnsie Elam launched her first homer of the season and OU's 45th of 2021 in the fourth inning on a solo strike to left center.

Oklahoma scattered three more runs across the fifth and sixth innings, courtesy of singles by Jennings and sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo and a sac-fly by Lyons to bring the final tally to 7-0, OU.

Jennings and Snow paced the Sooners in the box, with Jennings recording her sixth multiple-hit game of her freshman season. The San Pedro, Calif., native finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in while Snow went 2-for-3 with one run scored and a triple.

Senior Jocelyn Alo extended her career long hitting streak to an impressive 27 games on a single through the left side in the fourth inning that advanced two base runners.

Oklahoma returns to action Saturday for day two of the Courtyard Marriott Tournament, matching up against No. 18/17 Missouri (13-2) at 12:30 p.m. CT before a 5:30 p.m. game with Louisiana Monroe. Both games will be available to watch on FOX Sports Oklahoma and can be heard on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) and the TuneIn app.
