NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team returns to the floor Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg, Va., for their first ever meeting with William & Mary College at 12 p.m. CT.
No. 1 Oklahoma travels to Williamsburg, Va., Saturday for its fourth meet of the 2021 season versus No. 11 William & Mary. The Sooners will compete at Kaplan Arena. The meet will be streamed live on William & Mary's Facebook platform (search @WMTribeMGYM).
The Sooners return to action for the first time since beating the No. 8 Army Black Knights on Jan. 30 in the first virtual competition in Oklahoma program history. The Sooners won by a score of 413.400-375.100 as OU competed inside historic McCasland Field House and Army performed its routines in West Point, N.Y.
After week seven of NCAA men's gymnastics competition, Oklahoma holds the top spot in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) standings and CGA Coaches Poll.
The Sooners posted the top score of the early season on opening weekend at the Rocky Mountain Open over Air Force and Arizona State, putting up a 414.450. The team's home-opening performance vs. Air Force inside McCasland Field House was completed with a 413.750 showing. During the first virtual meet of the season, the Sooners swept Army 413.400-375.100 as OU competed in McCasland Field House and Army performed its routines in West Point, N.Y.
OU holds the top team average in the country (413.867) along with the top spots on four of six events. The Sooners rank first on floor exercise (70.617), pommel horse (67.383), vault (72.317) and parallel bars (68.450) and second on still rings (68.500) and high bar (67.217).
Individually, Sooners hold two of the top-10 spots in the all-around rankings, led by junior Spencer Goodell's 81.200 score, which is good for seventh. Junior Vitaliy Guimaraes is eighth in the country after his 80.917 all-around effort against Army.
On floor exercise, Sooners hold the top two spots in the CGA standings. Senior Gage Dyer is No. 1 with a NQA of 14.850 following his three victories on the event in the first three meets of the season. Seyler ranks second at 14.400.
OU holds two top-10 spots in the pommel horse standings, led by freshman Zach Nunez's third-place ranking and 13.600 NQA. Redshirt sophomore Braden Collier ranks eighth with a 13.550 average. Junior Vitaliy Guimaraes sits right outside the top-10 at 12th with a 13.440 average.
On still rings, three Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Goodell leads the way with his 13.717 average that ranks seventh overall, redshirt senior Matt Wenske sits in eighth with a 13.690, and Collier and sophomore Alan Camillus tie for 10th with a 13.500. Guimaraes follows closely behind in 11th place with a 13.488.
The Sooners have two representatives in the top 10 on vault. Redshirt junior Mason Menser and Dyer tie for sixth at 14.533. Redshirt sophomore Josh Corona (14.367) trails close behind at 11th.
Oklahoma holds three top-10 spots in the parallel bars rankings. Wenske (14.150) is fifth and redshirt sophomore Cesar Gracia and Goodell tie for the seven spot with a 13.667 NQA. Sandro (13.575) and Camillus (13.550) follow close behind in 11th and 12th.
On high bar, three Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Guimaraes holds the three spot with a 13.580. Sophomore Jack Freeman (13.517) and Sandro (13.450) sit sixth and eighth, respectively.
Four current and former University of Oklahoma men's gymnasts claimed U.S. Senior Men's National spots at the conclusion of the 2021 USA Gymnastics Winter Cup in Indianapolis last Sunday.
Former Sooners Allan Bower and Yul Moldauer retained their spots on the national team following their performances on Friday on day one of the meet, while current junior Vitaliy Guimaraes and alum Genki Suzuki gained their spots on the team following Sunday's competition.
It marks the first senior national team roster spot for Guimaraes, while Suzuki regained his spot on the team. Following the meet, OU alum Colin Van Wicklen successfully petitioned on to the team, making it five roster spots for the Sooners on the U.S.N.T. The five Sooners on Team USA are the most of any university on the U.S. squad.
Moldauer took home the event crown on parallel bars with a two-day total of 28.150, putting up a 13.850 score in his second routine Sunday evening. Suzuki claimed the high bar event title with a two-day tally of 27.250 after putting up a 13.600 on day two. Moldauer collected three more top-five finishes at the meet, taking third on floor (28.300), fourth on pommel horse (27.750) and fifth on still rings (27.950). Suzuki claimed sixth on pommel horse (27.200).
Guimaraes claimed two top-10 finishes, placing fifth on high bar with a 26.700 two-day total and eighth on parallel bars (25.900). Current Sooner senior captain Matt Wenske put up a solid day-two performance. Wenske placed sixth on parallel bars after a two-day 26.750 tally and a tie for seventh on still rings, registering a 27.450 two-day score.
The Sooners will return to McCasland Field House in Norman March 13 for a meet against No. 3 Stanford University at 1 p.m. CT. Attendance for the 2021 season is on a pass-list only basis. The meet will be available to watch on FOX Sports Oklahoma.
