OU Claims Series with Game Two Win

March 27, 2021 | Softball

AMES, Iowa — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team claimed the series over Iowa State with a win in the second game of the series Saturday, beating the Cyclones 10-2 in six innings.

With the win, the 2021 team now holds the record for the best unbeaten streak to start a season in program history at 24-0. Oklahoma also improved its win streak to 31 consecutive games and Big 12 regular season unbeaten streak to 45 contests.

OU redshirt senior Shannon Saile pitched 4.2 innings, striking out an OU career-best 11 batters and allowing just two runs on two hits to go with four walks. Senior Lynnsie Elam and junior Grace Green both went yard on respective two- and three-run home runs to propel the Sooners to their 17th run-rule victory of the season.

Oklahoma jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning off a two-RBI single from junior Grace Lyons. Lyons brought in another run on a bases-loaded walk in the second, plating freshman Tiare Jennings following a two-out double from the frosh. Senior Taylon Snow laced a two-RBI single down the left line to bring in two more OU runs and make it 5-0 after two.

Iowa State got on the board in the third inning on a bases-loaded hit by pitch.

After a bunt single from freshman Jayda Coleman in the fifth, Elam launched her second home run of the season and 16th of her career to left center to plate two more OU runs.

The Cyclones got one run back in the bottom of the fifth off a solo home run from Carli Spelhaug before Green blasted a pinch-hit, three-run shot to right center to bring the game into mercy-rule territory at 10-2.

Sophomore Olivia Rains entered in the bottom of the fifth, going 1.1 innings to close the game for the Sooners, allowing no runs or walks in her three batters faced. Saile collected her seventh win of the season in the circle.

Iowa State's pitching staff walked 11 batters on the day, including four to senior Jocelyn Alo in her four plate appearances. It marked the first time that an OU batter drew four-plus walks in a game since Nicole Pendley drew four free bases against Iowa State on March 31, 2017. With no recorded at-bats, Alo's program-record 37 game hit streak remains intact.

Lyons went a perfect 2-for-2 on the day with a pair of walks, while Snow brought in two runs for the Sooners in a 2-for-3 performance that included one walk.

Coleman extended her hit streak to 10 consecutive games with a single in the fifth and one stolen base.

With two more home runs Saturday, Oklahoma has now launched 81 home runs in 2021, good for first in the NCAA by over 15.

OU will go for their 55th straight Big 12 series victory in the finale Sunday at noon CT. The game can be seen via subscription on Big 12 NOW on ESPN+ and heard on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app.
